Military Moms React to News of Bin Laden's Death

Whether or not this news changes anything remains to be seen, they say.

Sue Gourdoux said that news of Osama Bin Laden's death is a blessing, but Americans should remain alert. Her son, Joe, served two tours in Iraq and narrowly missed being sent to Afghanistan for his third tour. Instead, he played a support role in Kuwait. "I know this is closure for some of the families," Gourdoux said. "But we shouldn't let (Bin Laden's) death decrease our fears. There's another evil guy to take his place." Gourdoux is the president of the Blue Star Mothers Southeast Wisconsin, Chapter 2, an organization that supports the moms of active and retired military. She said she thinks President Obama did a great job getting Bin Laden at just the right time, but her focus is on the men and women in uniform. "I'm so proud of our …

Blue Star Mothers Help Support Parents with Children in the Military

Military Moms need a special kind of support and understanding that only other Military Moms can provide.

When Joan Van Swol's son was deployed to Iraq the first time, she didn't have the unique level of supportive understanding that she gets with Blue Star Mothers. "I have a terrific family, but unless you're the mother of a deployed service member, you just don't know what it's like," she said. "No one knows what military moms go through except other military moms." Blue Star Mothers is a support, social and service group devoted to supporting the moms of active and retired military personnel. The Southeast Wisconsin, Chapter 2 group meets the third Thursday of each month at Sturtevant Village Hall. They share a pot luck meal and discuss upcoming events in which they'll participate, like the Memorial Day parade or putting together care …
