Mount Pleasant Wants Caledonia to Start Paying on Sewer

The two villages entered into a contract in 2009 for sewer capacity and connectivity.

Despite Caledonia not yet connecting to the Highway 20 sewer main, Mount Pleasant wants that village to start paying on the $5 million outlined in the contract. As stated in the contract from the fall of 2008, Caledonia agreed to pay Mount Pleasant $5 million when and if Caledonia hooks up to the sewer connection. Because there hasn't been the corresponding connection, Caledonia hasn't made any payments to Mount Pleasant. But that hasn't stopped interest from accruing and compounding, bringing the amount now owed to Mount Pleasant to about $5.5 million and climbing. An excellent question! Why need a contract - with such a hefty price tag - if there are no plans to use the connections? We don't have these answers. I worry for the residents of Caledonia now trying to make a deal with the City of Racine - 10 years AFTER the water/sewer agreements were signed. The potential for paying big money looms large.   more ›
