The Caledonia Conservancy Facebook page reported that a cougar was “seen coming and going out of an abandoned barn numerous times” on a property at 6 Mile and Foley Road three times over the weekend. The DNR investigated the sighting. However, they were unable to confirm the alleged sighting. Tim Lizotte, wildlife management supervisor for the DNR, said they investigated a report of a cougar sighting on Saturday. An elderly woman told her son that she saw a large cat coming in and out of her barn, which was reported on the Caledonia Conservancy's Facebook page. The woman’s son reported the sighting to the DNR and a DNR warden came out to the home on May 4. “We didn’t see the animal,” Lizotte said. “There were no tracks, scat or hair. So it…

If you've ever been out on the Caledonia Conservancy trails, here's your chance to give back.
A benefit for Jon Soderberg's family is set for Saturday at the North Star Banquet Hall.
To his final day, Jon Soderberg was a man who thought of others before himself. If you had a problem at your farm or house, he was there. If you mentioned your lawn mower wasn't working, Soderberg might show up at your house with his lawn mower to help out, said Eric Roberson, who worked with Soderberg through the Caledonia Conservancy. "If you want to look at the definition of a good neighbor, Jon was it," Roberson said. "He was just, in my estimation, what makes a community." Even in his last weeks, when many others would have been fulfilling their bucket list, Soderberg was tending to the needs of his family to ensure they were taken care of after he passed. Now, those who knew him best are hoping the community can return the favor. A …

We love our land here in Caledonia and many would like to keep it green. But there's an ongoing battle to keep the village financially sustainable.
We've always known that Caledonia leans green, but when we posted a photo of a wildlife bridge in the Netherlands it started an interesting conversation about land conservation, taxes and crime rate. Here's what we posted on Facebook and what you said: Saw this on another FB page - Think it would work in Wisconsin? This is a wildlife bridge in the Netherlands. Wildlife bridges are designed to help animals cross busy highways in safety. They don't just protect wildlife from being hit by cars - they also connect fragmented habitats and help populations intermingle and breed. The Netherlands is leading the way in designing these bridges. The country is home to more than 600 similar crossings.

The award for equine land conservation was given to this local group which has preserved more than 122 acres of land, and is one of the oldest land trusts in the state.
Members of the Caledonia Conservancy received a leadership award for their work in equine land conservation from the Equine Land Conservation Resource. The Land Conservation Resource, a national not for-profit organization, focuses on conserving land for horse for horse-related activity. The group presented the Anson W. Taylor, Jr. Award for Leadership in Equine Land Conservation to Caledonia Conservancy president Eric Roberson in September during their Midwest Reception in Salt Lake City. “We are proud to honor Caledonia Conservancy with the Anson W. Taylor, Jr. award because of the organization’s strength in equine land and trail conservation, understanding of and activity in shared-use recreational trails, positive organizational …
Caledonia Conservancy members treated the community to hay rides, hot dogs, nature-oriented craft projects and information about what you can find on their trails. Feel free to add your photos to the photo gallery.
Ever wondered what geo-caching is or how to do it? The Caledonia Conservancy has you covered... all you have to do is show up.
Looking for that ever popular park that needs a little TLC, Coca-Cola and Subway want you to tell them which parks should get $100,000. This made me wonder, which parks in Caledonia could use a little sprucing up?
Caledonia has some great outdoor recreational spaces. But is there a park in Caledonia that could use a little extra help? Coca-Cola and Subway are looking to give away money for "America's favorite park" and I thought it would be interesting to start a discussion about which parks in Caledonia might fit that bill. Take a look at our list of parks and recreational areas in Caledonia (be careful because there are a few of them in our directory that are just outside Caledonia). Lets do a little dreaming about what we could do with that money and I'd love to see some photos of your favorite parks. I'd love to see some of the parks in Caledonia get that money. Click here to learn how to campaign for your favorite park.

Denise, there used to be a canoe launch that we installed when I was President through a grant that Wendy McCalvy applied for. Unfortunately, it got washed away in the ame flooding that eroded the road at Gorney.   more ›

@Jim, I know there was also a person who sighted an animal they thought looked like a cougar in December of 2011. It was back in the subdivision by Brossman's near Six Mile Road. I called the woman, but she never got back to me. Do you live around there? I can't underscore enough how skeptical the DNR is about these alleged sightings. When I spoke to the DNR's media person, he said most of these …   more ›
