Village Hall Roof 'In Sad Shape,' Getting Needed Repairs

Trustees agreed to address needed roof repairs at Village Hall.

Village Hall will get much needed roof repairs this year. Board members agreed Monday to pursue the repairs, which could total $30,000 or more. The money to pay for the repairs and the partial replacement will come from left-over funds allocated for the 3-Mile Road project with the City of Racine. The total amount budgeted for that project was $315,000 but Caledonia only has to pay $277,470. Another $17,000 is tied up in another account, leaving $56,000 available. Trustee Jim Dobbs was blunt about the shape of the roof. "It's in sad shape," he said. "There are several spots above the building and engineering departments where the water just pours in when we have rainfall." Building and Development Manager Jim Keeker said the roof is …

A Look Inside Caledonia's Village Hall

With a leaky roof, water dripping down the walls, air purifiers throughout the building keeping down the mold, insufficient work space and not being handicap accessible -- has the Village Hall outlived its purpose?

Discussion has been brewing on whether the Village should repair the Village Hall or build a new one. The building was constructed in 1953 when the Village was a Town. Mark Janiuk told the committee that village officials need to make a decision about where a possible new village hall would be built and that they commit to purchasing a new site. Dobbs agreed with Janiuk, but still believed the carpet and roof needed to be replaced. Staff told the committee that since 1993, they’ve been dealing with leaks in the roof and during the last rain there were “10-12 leaks in the engineering and building departments,” the roof over the highway department “wouldn’t last one more season,” and the electrical system in the building “is a nightmare.” …

Does The Village Need To Build A New Village Hall?

Village staff have been coping with a leaky roof for well over a decade and the carpeting needs replaced. Could it be time for the village board to consider building a new hall?

A leaky roof and worn carpeting has prompted a village committee to consider building a new village hall. Village trustee Jim Dobbs told the public works committee earlier this month that he would like the village board to start planning for a new village hall, according to meeting minutes. However, he would still like staff to get some quotes to see how much a new roof and carpeting would cost. Village administrator Mark Janiuk said the cost of repairing the roof may not be worthwhile, and repainting and re-carpeting the village hall may be too disruptive for village staff. One of the main issues is that the village hall has a flat roof. Janiuk told the committee that village officials need to make a decision about where a possible new …

How to Register to Vote in Caledonia

In honor of National Voter Registration Day, we’re giving you all the information you need on how and where to register to vote.

If you haven’t yet registered to vote, get it off your to-do list now. Thousands of local, state and national organizations have mobilized to make sure millions of people don’t miss the chance to cast their vote in this year’s elections. Six million people didn’t vote in the 2008 elections because they either did not know how to register or because they missed the voter registration deadline. Here’s information on how you can register in time for the Nov. 6 elections: Elections officials urge voters to use the state's Voter Public Access website to make sure that they are registered at their current address.  Additionally, VPA will identify the races voters are eligible to vote in, and will tell voters whether they are eligible. Voters who…

There is no "NEW" law. If you have a valid drivers license and voted in the past 30 years, nothing has changed. There's no need to watch the video and sign the petition, and there is no Voter Suppression. That all ended before you were born.   more ›
