As flu season wanes a new Super Bug from Australia is taking its place in the spotlight.
A new strain of the highly contagious norovirus has reached the U.S. from Australia. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that the new norovirus, named GII.4 Sydney because it's believed to have started in Sydney, Australia, is currently the leading cause of norovirus outbreaks in the U.S. In the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report released Jan. 25, the norovirus is described as: the leading cause of epidemic gastroenteritis, including foodborne outbreaks, in the U.S. Hospitalization and mortality associated with norovirus infection occur most frequently among elderly persons, young children, and immunocompromised patients. With 59 cases of whooping cough reported in eastern Racine County since January, health officials are asking residents to make sure they are up to date with their vaccinations. Wisconsin currently leads the nation in the number of reported cases with 5,163 confirmed or probable cases reported, according to the Wisconsin Division of Public Health (WDPH). The highly-contagious communicable disease starts out like a cold in infants and young children, with a low-grade fever and cough that appears seven to 20 days after a person has been exposed. As the illness advances, a person can have explosive coughing, and may be followed by vomiting and exhaustion. 84 cases in 19 states have been reported to the Center for Disease Control.
An elderly person from Racine County is one of two people in the state who has eaten food contaminated with the listeria bacteria, according to an article in the Racine Journal Times. The Center for Disease Control has linked the two cases to a national outbreak involving 84 cases in 19 states. The strain was caused by the person eating contaminated canteloupes from Colorado-based Jensen Farms. The company, according to the FDA website, included Wisconsin in a recall on Sept. 14. According to the CDC, if a person has been infected with the listeria bacteria, they will have "fever and muscle aches, sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms.
