United Way Sets Ambitious Goal Over $5 Million

Christopher Ruud of Sturtevant-based Ruud Lighting is the 2011-2012 fundraising campaign chairman.

Using his love of racing to frame the new United Way campaign year, Christopher Ruud at Ruud Lighting helped kick off the new fundraising effort on Sept. 8. The organization has an ambitious goal, asking for $5.25 million, a five percent increase over the 2010 goal, which United Way didn't meet. "This is our largest campaign ever," said Dave Mauer, United Way executive director. "We were short of our goal, but I think we'll make it this year." Ruud echoed the sentiment. "I actually have two goals with this campaign," he explained. "I want to increase giving by five percent to meet the goal that Dave has set. 99% of the money donated to our local United Way stays right here in Racine County and I believe the percentage that goes to overhead and administrative costs is less than 10%. I'm sure the folks at United Way could provide the exact percentage for last year.   more ›

Some Residents Living Near Highway 38 Want The Project To Move Forward As Is

A number of Caledonia residents say the road is unsafe.

A number of Caledonia residents want to see the Highway 38 project go through as proposed by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation while others want Highway H to be the new route. The residents spoke at a Village Board meeting held Tuesday during a public comment period. The current plan includes spending $125 million to reroute Highway 38 by building a new Highway 38 that would cut through farm fields and a proposed expansion of the Franksville Industrial Park. The Village Board had voiced opposition last month to the southern portion of a new route for Highway 38 because the Industrial Park would essentially lose 80 acres if the road goes through it.
