It's been 10 years since the start of the Iraq War. Caledonia lost one of its own in the Iraq War.
The 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq began 10 years ago this week — on March 19, 2003 — and although officially "over," fighting continues. By one count, the war is directly responsible for 189,000 deaths, not including those who died from hardship caused by the fighting. CNN has a stunning map of all casualties in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. In all, 4,802 Americans and allies have died in the war, according to the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count, including 89 from Wisconsin. Among them was one person from Caledonia. From the CNN war casualties web site:

Brian Dey remembers a second fallen hero.
On July 9, our village came together to pay tribute to Marine Lance Corporal Daniel Wyatt in what could be described as one of the finest moments in our village’s history. I would like to include another local hero, who gave her life in much the same fashion. The July 9th dedication of the Daniel Wyatt Memorial Ball Park was such a fitting memorial to one of our local heroes that gave his life for love of country. From the memories of Daniel’s Commanding Officer, who stood only 400 meters away from where Daniel took his last breath, to the wonderful eulogies from our state and local leaders, the day was representative of the honor our community shows when one of our own makes the ultimate sacrifice. As I stood in the back of the …

Local soldier was killed in Iraq in 2004.
Daniel Wyatt served in the Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 24th Marine Reserve regiment out of Milwaukee. And it was with those men - Capt. Roman Koshkin and Col. Morgan Mann - who came to a memorial ceremony at Crawford Park to honor Wyatt's service to his country. Hundreds of people gathered at the park to listen to Mann tell the story of Wyatt's death, which happened on October 12, 2004, and his life as a Marine. Several times Mann's voice cracked as he told how he heard and felt the explosion, how the radio came alive with the news that Daniel had died from the blast of an improvised explosive device and how Wyatt had most certainly saved his fellow Marines. Village board member, Tom Weatherston, said he didn't know Wyatt, but when you've …

People from all over the country have been donating money toward a memorial for a Caledonia man killed in Iraq in 2004.
UPDATE: The Dedication Ceremony for the Danial Wyatt Memorial Ball Park will be held at 1 p.m. July 9 at Crawford Park, 5051 Chester Lane. In some ways, Daniel Wyatt grew up just like any other kid in Caledonia. But for those who knew him and even for those who didn’t know him, Lance Cpl. Daniel Wyatt died a hero in 2004 when he was killed while serving in Iraq as a Marine Corps Reservist. That is the reason why Tom Weatherston, a Village Board member, felt compelled to honor Daniel’s service. Honoring a Life of Service Last month, the Village Board approved a resolution to name the concession stand and the baseball diamond area the “Lance Corporal Daniel Wyatt Memorial Ball Diamond” at Crawford Park. The park is located at 5199 Chester …

The Daniel Wyatt Memorial Ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. July 9 at Crawford Park.
Over a dozen kids and their moms came out for a little recreation and supported a good cause during a Zumbathon at the Caledonia Community Center last week. Jenny Petrick, who helped organize the event, held the salsa influenced excercise class to help raise money for the Daniel Wyatt Memorial Fund. She raised $170, which fell short of her goal. "But at least it's something," she said. Petrick has known the Wyatt family for years. And when she heard that a memorial was being built to honor Daniel Wyatt, who was killed in Iraq in 2004, she decided to help raise money to help pay for it. Last month, the Village Board approved a resolution to name the concession stand and the baseball diamond area the “Lance Corporal Daniel Wyatt Memorial …

Lance Corporal Daniel Wyatt was killed in 2004 while serving in Iraq.
Caledonia resident Jennifer Petrick has known the Wyatt family for years. And when she heard that a memorial was being built to honor Daniel Wyatt, who was killed in Iraq in 2004, she decided to help raise money to help pay for it. Last month, the Village Board approved a resolution to name the concession stand and the baseball diamond area the “Lance Corporal Daniel Wyatt Memorial Ball Diamond” at Crawford Park. The park is located at 5199 Chester Lane. A flagpole will also be erected and a plaque will be at the base of the flagpole. Petrick is hosting a fundraiser where people can buy products from Wildtree Herbs from her and 20 percent of the proceeds will go to help pay for the memorial. But since Petrick knew Daniel, she’s also giving…

Daniel Wyatt loved playing baseball and the Village Board approved a memorial in his honor Tuesday.
A memorial and park dedication will honor a Caledonia Marine, who died while serving in Iraq. Lance Corporal Daniel R. Wyatt, 22, was killed in the Babil Province, Iraq, on October 12, 2004. To honor his service and sacrifice, the Village Board approved a resolution Tuesday to name the concession stand and baseball diamond area the Lance Corporal Daniel Wyatt Memorial Ball Diamond at Crawford Park. The park is located at 5199 Chester Lane. Tom Weatherston, a Village Board member, said naming the area was important to him because he served in the military during the Vietnam War and he feels that all servicemen are brothers. “It’s important to honor a Caledonia native who lost his life in service to his country,” Weatherston said. Wyatt also…
