There's been a lot going on and things are sure to be hectic as we approach November 6th. Here are some things I have been thinking about.
With the election being days away, life has been busy and I have been pretty pre-occupied with political conversations, duties, events and thoughts. There have been quite a few things on my mind lately so I thought I would give you a peak into some of my random civically-based brain activity. What’s in it for Me? A few mornings ago, I was listening to talk radio and a guy called in and said that people typically vote with one question in mind – “What’s in it for me?” Do you think this is true? I do not. People often comment on my articles about my being a leach, a moocher or something of that nature. I can assure that is certainly not true. I have never collected any kind of entitlement unless you count a student loan, and I have paid it …

Intimidation, redistricting, voter ID laws and changes in voting rules may turn some people off from voting in November. Arm yourself with knowledge so that you can safely participate in democracy.
It seems so clear – if you want to win an election, keep the opponent’s supporters from voting. Duh. It’s just so obvious, right? Problem is, you can only get away with the obvious for so long before the masses begin take notice. There has been a strong and persistent effort to disenfranchise groups of our population who typically tend to vote Democrat. I have little doubt that this has been a GOP fantasy for quite some time. And low and behold the Tea Party flew in on their rebel flag bumper stickered broomsticks and made their dreams come true. From passing photo voter ID laws to redistricting to changing registration rules – the Tea Party-infused GOP is making voting more challenging across the nation for a considerable percentage of …

Kelley Albrecht can bring something new to the 63rd Assembly District. Armed with integrity and compassion, Albrecht can bring some much needed change.
Possible Ironic Fraud? “I did not personally witness any voter fraud,” Vos said. “But some portion of what happened could be classified as fraud.” That was Representative Robin Vos’ statement on Upfront with Mike Gousha shortly after the Senator Lehman/Wanggaard recount fiasco. Vos has been a staunch supporter of Voter ID laws and a big ole wolf crier on voter fraud. What makes it all the more ironic that his soon-to-be ex wife is being investigated for, yep, you guessed it ... voter fraud. Vos’ opponent for the 63rd Assembly District, Kelley Albrecht, stated, “It is beyond the pale that the only case of documented voter fraud in Racine County may have occurred in Rep. Vos’ family – a family having many, many years of experience working in…

Supporter of Gov. Scott Walker was arrested for disorderly conduct after a verbal altercation with a few Barrett backers at Milwaukee rally with Clinton.
A vocal supporter of Gov. Scott Walker was arrested for disorderly conduct Friday during a rally for Democrat Tom Barrett that featured former President Bill Clinton. During the morning rally at Pere Marquette Park in Milwaukee, the Walker supporter was holding a sign that read "Support Scott Walker NOT Union Thugs." In the middle of the crowd, he would put his sign in front of other signs supporting Barrett. One Patch reader gives her take on the events: "My husband and I were at the rally standing six feet from him 15 minutes before the rally began, during, and when he was arrested as the rally ended," she writes. "Even before the rally began he was screaming at people near him that held recall signs. Get out the vote volunteers flanked …

Keep focused, educate and stick together...this fight can be won.
We can hold onto our hopes. We can work our dialing fingers to the bone. We can donate the last few dollars left over from our meager paychecks. And we can anxiously wait to cast our ballots. However, the crystal ball is cloudy. The cards are laid out, but not speaking. The tea leaves are not settling on the bottom of the cup. And not one single person in this state can definitively predict the outcome of the June 5 recall election. Polls only tell us so much. In fact, they say very little. The numbers from the primary cannot be counted as foreshadowing because we simply do not know who voted for whom or why. Perhaps many Democrats stayed home because they simply couldn’t decide. Maybe too many people were confused about the fake …

At least two members want to be board president.
At least two Racine Unified School District Board of Education members will be seeking the board president post when the group holds its annual reorganization meeting at 4:30 pm tonight, April 25 at the Administrative Service Center, 2220 Northwestern Ave. Bill Van Atta, who has served as School Board president the past two years, plans to seek another one-year term. “I would be interested in continuing. But, somebody else may want to step up as well,” he said. Dennis Wiser, who was re-elected to a second term on April 5, says he plans to toss his hat in the ring “to see how many Board members are unhappy with the way things are.” Wiser has split with the majority of the School Board during the past year on major issues, including placing …

Neither Mount Pleasant, Caledonia nor Sturtevant has any missing votes.
Unlike what happened in Waukesha County, the vote canvass in Racine County went smoothly. A representative who answered the phone at the Racine County Clerk's office confirmed that the canvass was completed before noon yesterday, April 7, and official results were posted online. According to the County's website, the results for both incumbent Justice David Prosser and Assistant District Attorney Joanne Kloppenburg did not change from the original post: 28,204 and 22,518, respectively. Sturtevant Village Clerk Mary Hanstad said the village's vote tallies were standing and that she had not been contacted by anyone from the County. "No, I think we're good," she said. "I was afraid the phone might ring, but we haven't heard anything."

Your civic duty is much more than pulling a lever, drawing a line or punching a hole.
Voting is such a simple act, but it is also a powerful act. And for journalists, elections are a little like Christmas. You spend months getting to know candidates, their quirks, their secrets, their successes, their failures and their ideology. You watch how they connect with people, see how their words fit together and test them on the things most of us take for granted – budgets, policies, programs and projects. You see how people challenge them and look for opportunities to share knowledge. On Election Day you get the end of an old storyline and the beginning of a new storyline. Locally, these decisions impact us in such profound ways, but I wonder if people realize this when they punch in that hole, pull a lever or drag that line from…

This shameless piece is nothing more than an Alinsky-like character assassination, wholly without substance. Of course, when you cannot find a single attribute that would justify Tammy getting elected, all that's left is vacuous demonization.   more ›
