Maren DeSonia wants to help her community by spearheading a drive to collect new toothbrushes to give to HALO, which serves people who are homeless. Here's how you can help.
Maren DeSonia, a second grade student at Jefferson Lighthouse, has a favor to ask the community for her community action project with her class. Here's her letter: My name is Maren. I am 8 years old. I am in 2nd grade at Jefferson Lighthouse School in Racine. My class is doing Community action projects. My idea is to give toothbrushes to the homeless people at HALO. I am asking people to please buy a toothbrush for my project. My goal is to get 50 toothbrushes and then my Mom will take me to HALO and we will give them to the kids and Moms and Dads that live at HALO. If you will buy a kids or big toothbrush this will help me with my project! Thank you for helping others! I am hoping some of my Racine friends/business owners will consider …

School Board Member Don Nielsen wants the Racine Unified School District Board of Education to examine whether cost savings are possible by displacing the district’s magnet schools with what he calls “walk-in neighborhood schools.” Nielsen’s host of suggestions also include redrawing middle and high school boundaries, maximizing use of the city of Racine’s bus system, constructing two replacement elementary schools, examining the costs of expanding career/technical education, eliminating sibling preference at magnet schools and expanding the district’s present magnet school offerings at other locations. He has asked that the School Board on Monday, June 21, to refer his suggestions to a future work session. “A lot of it is stuff that I’ve …

From free art classes to $550 flying lessons, there is something for everyone.
Summer is coming and the kids need something to do, so Racine Unified School District is holding a one-stop-shopping event to connect families to great camps and classes -- many of which are free. The “Summer Activities Fair” will be held on Saturday, May 14, at Festival Hall in Racine from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There, parents will be able to sign up on the spot for RUSD summer school and summer camps, as well as other programs. “It is a great way for kids to see all the cool activities they can be doing this summer,” said Jonathan Peters, Project Manager of Parent and Community Outreach. “For parents, it will be a one-stop shop to ensure their children are registered and engaged for the entire summer.” Elementary classes include “Beads, Bowls…

Mount Pleasant-Sturtevant Patch resident Soren Gajewski is Principal of Jefferson Lighthouse School, and he offers his view of the voucher system.
As the Directing Principal for Jefferson Lighthouse, and as a former teacher in the Milwaukee Public School system, I feel obligated to warn my neighbors about the impending expansion of the school voucher system. Initially, the idea was sold as a way to give poor children an opportunity to attend private schools. The competition, in theory, would give public schools an incentive to “do a better job.” Meanwhile, poor students would have an opportunity to attend alternative types of programs, including religious, in hopes that those programs would raise achievement. While the idea has some good will in it, the outcome should be of great concern for everyone. Warning signs, for me as a classroom teacher, were seen shortly after the …
