$1 Billion UW Surplus Has State Lawmakers Outraged

Governor Scott Walker and state legislative leaders call for tuition freeze at the University of Wisconsin after hearing the unexpected news.

A recent financial review of the UW System found a $1 billion surplus, and state lawmakers are furious. According to a story on Wispolitics.com, a review by the Legislative Fiscal Bureau discovered the overage. Still, that leaves almost $650 million in university system coffers, some $414 million from tuition alone. GOP leaders in Madison — including Joint Finance Co-Chairs Sen. Alberta Darling (R-River Hills) and Rep. John Nygren (R-Marinette) — issued a statement shortly after they received the LFB's report, taking UW officials to task over what they said is "gross mismanagement of …

Vos, Weatherston, Mason Take Oath in Madison

Now that lawmakers are all sworn into office, the Legislature can get to work.

Rep. Robin Vos, R-Rochester, is now Speaker Robin Vos, and Tom Weatherston is officially Rep. Tom Weatherston, R-Caledonia. Both took the oath of office Monday at the Capitol Building in Madison. This is Vos' 5th term representing the 63rd Assembly District and Weatherston's first term. He is also a trustee in the Village of Caledonia. In a written statement after he was sworn in, Vos said he is looking forward to members of both parties working together, and that the first order of business will be reforming Wisconsin mining laws. “I’m optimistic that Republicans and Democrats can come together to find the best solutions for Wisconsin’s future,” Vos said in the release.  “We all must put aside our differences in order to bring more jobs …

Racine Unified Parents Will Have School Choice This Fall

The motion passed the Joint Committee on Finance with an 11-4 vote.

School choice is coming to the Racine Unified School District, after the Joint Committee on Finance passed a measure June 2, that will help some parents pay to send their children to private schools. The measure will be included in the full state budget for the 2011-13 biennium and is expected to pass the state Legislature later this month. The program will be open to parents throughout the district. In a press release sent out shortly after the vote, Representative Robin Vos (R-Rochester), co-chair of the committee, said, "Parents deserve to have the opportunity to select the best school for their children. Racine area parents want a choice program and I’m excited that we’re bringing it to our area.” All RUSD students entering ninth grade…

I am not sure how I feel about this issue. On one hand I like being able to have a bigger choice about the schools my children attend but I have to agree with Heather on at least one plane - parental influence when it comes to kids coming to school to learn or just goof off. Many teachers have their hands tied when it comes to discipline and unfortunately the very laws that have been instituted …   more ›
