Updated 10:10 p.m.: Wirch Ready to Get Back to Work in Madison; Steitz Thankful for Support

Patch editors will spend the evening with State Sen. Bob Wirch and challenger Jonathan Steitz as they face off to see whether Wirch will keep his seat or if Republican Steitz will take it from him.

10:15 p.m. Steitz statement at end of night Caledonia Patch editor Denise Lockwood has this report: Despite losing the race, Jonathan Steitz said he wouldn’t change a thing, and that God must have a purpose for him and he thanked his supporters. “My three year old doesn’t care that I lost, she still gives me a hug,” Steitz said. “I know that God has a plan for my life. I know that in a year, or two years or 15 years – that there was purpose in this. And I know there was purpose in me not prevailing and I have a lot of confidence in that.” The crowd clapped, and shouted “Amen” and “We love you.” Steitz said he didn’t want the crowd to be discouraged either. 10:10 p.m. Wirch statement at end of night Mount Pleasant-Sturtevant Patch editor …

Traffic at Kenosha Polls Lives Up to High Expectations

Poll workers confirm steady streams of traffic at two locations.

Residents of Senate District 22 filed through polling locations on Aug. 16 at a steady pace for the recall election of Bob Wirch (D-Kenosha). He faces Republican challenger Jonathan Steitz. Marty Redlin, chief inspector at the Moose Lodge on 30th Street, said turnout is less than during the 2008 Presidential election but well above normal. "I feel like this is an emotional election for people on both sides," he said. "And it's interesting because with the redistricting maps, neither candidate lives inside the new senate district." Wirch was targeted for recall because he was one of 14 state senators to leave the state to stop a vote on Governor Scott Walker's budget repair bill, which removed most collective bargaining rights from public …

Republican Swing Vote Could be Result of Aug. 16 Recall Elections

One Republican senator seems unafraid to vote his own way, and that could shift the balance on some votes, but only if the Senate maintains a 17-16 split.

What do you call a state senator who votes against the party line? Here is Wisconsin, we might call that senator the swing vote, especially if the state Senate retains its 17-16 Republican majority split after the Aug. 16 recall elections. Up for grabs are two Democratic seats. Bob Wirch (D-Kenosha) and Jim Holperin (D-Conover) will face challengers Jonathan Steitz and Kim Simac, respectively. Should both Wirch and Holperin win, Dale Schultz (R-Richland Center) will fast become a much-courted vote for both sides of the aisle. According to John Nichols of The Capital Times this morning, Aug. 14, on Upfront with Mike Gousha, Democrats picking up two seats in the Aug. 9 recall elections brings more balance to the Senate. "One Republican state…

Heather, you are partially correct. If the Republicans pick up only one seat then Schultz will not be a factor. Not to mention that the Senate districts have changed. The re-districting should allow for at least 2 more seats next fall. The fantastic job that Gov. Walker and the elected majority will be able to move forward. I also believe the new jobs initiative will have bi-partison support.   more ›
