Village Board Races Heat Up With Contested Races

All four positions for the Caledonia Village Board will have two candidates on the April ballot. One of the positions will also have a primary election in February.

Four of the seven Caledonia village board seats are up for election this spring including the village president's position, and each has a contested race. The village trustee number three position will have a primary election on February 19. The top two vote getters from that race will then be on the spring election on April 2 along with the other positions. Trustees serve two-year terms and are paid $6,600 per year. The village president is paid $13,000 per year and serves a two-year term. Candidates have until 5 p.m. today to file papers. We'll update the list if any additional candidates file. I was falsely accused and I answered. :) if that's angry to you, how do you classify your own? Yeah, I'm sharp tongued and get to the point. Hopefully that gets me some votes. It is odd that you're attacking me when I've attacked no one here. Just pointing out the truth and explaining my positions to one who clearly have no idea where I stand. Guilty as charged.   more ›

Historical Museum On Hold

Caledonia officials put a stop to the project because they were upset that members of the Caledonia Historical Society didn’t seek input from the Parks Commission for any of their Linwood Park projects.

Plans to build a museum in Linwood Park were delayed after the Village revoked the Caledonia Historical Society’s building permit at Monday’s Village Board meeting. The Village Board relinquished control, maintenance and operation of Linwood Park to the Caledonia Historical Society last year. Since then, the CHS has moved a caboose to the park, built a log cabin and wanted to start building a museum with a non-working blacksmith shop. The Village Board knew about the caboose and log cabin, but not the museum/blacksmith shop. When they found out about the Historical Society’s plans, they also realized no one from the historical society had sought permission from the Parks Commission for any of the projects, said Trustee Kathy Burton. “The …

Garbage! Caledonia Board Member Says New Contract Will Cost Taxpayers More

Jerry Griswold asked the board to reopen the contract discussion.

UPDATE: Jerry Griswold, a Village Board member, asked the board to reopen the contract talks because he feels the Board was given misinformation after John's didn't fill out the contract to the Village's specifications. Tom Lebak, the Village Administrator, said he faxed over what he thought was a complete contract, but apparently some of the pages were missing. Board members had discussed this issue during a special board meeting. One of the main issues however was that the John's contract didn't include a reimbursement for recycling, which the Veolia contract did have. Griswold claims this could have saved taxpayers $55,000, but other board members stipulated that the reimbursement amount isn't a guarantee. Still, Lee Wishau, another …

After this weeks fiasco of garbage pick-up, I think the board made the right decision. I took my garbage out Mon pm thinking garbage was delayed one day. I looked down the road and saw empty cans. I went to call Veolia about 3pm Mon and was told that The Journal Times made a mistake and they would come back for $25. I hauled it all back and now I can take 2 week of holiday trash next week and 1 …   more ›

Should Communities Be Allowed To Scrap Their Land Use Plan?

Why would a state Legislator want communities to scrap them?

A bill proposed in the state Assembly would allow communities to scrap their land use plans if they wanted to do so. Current law requires that land use plans be consistent with a municipality's comprehensive plan. Ordinances that would be affected would include: official mapping, local subdivision regulation and zoning ordinances. If a municipality creates or alters a current ordinance, the comprehensive plan has to include the required planning elements. However, if AB 303 were made into law, it would allow communities to discontinue comprehensive planning if they wanted to, even if they already have one on file.  The bill was introduced by Mary Williams (R-Medford) and Scott Suder (R-Abbotsford) and has the support from a number of other…

State Assembly Bill (AB 303) largely repeals Land Use Planning requirements, thus opening the door to companies or developers to propose the placement of commercial or industrial developments at conflicting or ill-conceived locations with little input from affected residents. Because AB 303 is due to go to the State Senate for vote, learn about the bill (and the benefits of Land Use Planning that…   more ›
