UPDATE: Bridge Work Set To Start Next Week On Four Mile Project

The project seems to be taking forever to complete, but here's the latest update from Mike Hayek, the Village Engineer.

Bridge building will begin on the Four Mile underpass project next week, said Mike Hayek, the village engineer. The project is meant to ease traffic congestion along the railroad tracks on Four Mile Road just west of Douglas Avenue and has been in the works since 2005. The underpass project was initiated because of a $2 billion We Energies expansion, which was completed in January. Progress has been made on the project, but the scheduled open date is now planned for July 2013. The road was originally closed in October 2011 and was set to complete by the end of this year. The project was delayed because the scope of the project had to be changed to include two bridges instead of one. They've also reduced the track shift from three to two. …

When Will Four Mile Road Open for Traffic?

For the past 10 months, Four Mile Road has been closed and residents were beginning to wonder if the project will ever be completed. Village Engineer Mike Hayek says, "Yes."

Despite being well aware of how long 4 Mile Road near the Union Pacific Railroad would be closed, some residents are starting to lose patience with the underpass project. Village engineer Mike Hayek acknowledged that while the project hasn’t been going fast enough for some residents, progress has been made, and the scheduled open date is planned for July 2013. The road was originally closed in October 2011 and was set to complete by the end of this year. However, the project, which is meant to ease traffic congestion along the railroad tracks on Four Mile Road just west of Douglas Avenue, has been in the works since 2005. The underpass project was initiated because of a $2 billion We Energies expansion, which was completed in January. …

Trustees Refuse to Get in the Middle of Private Road Dispute

Madison Truck Equipment has asked for the driveway — which it shares with Time Transport — to be reconstructed after 4-foot error found.

A private driveway to be used by two Caledonia companies is at the center of a dispute the Village trustees unanimously agreed not to get in the middle of Tuesday evening during their Village Board meeting.   The driveway, to be shared by Time Transport and Madison Truck Equipment along the 27th Street frontage road, was constructed off center by 4 feet of the 66-foot right-away, explained Village Engineer Mike Hayek, who brought the issue to the attention of the Village Board.  Officials at Time Transport has requested the driveway be left as is. Officials at Madison Truck and Equipment have asked for the driveway to be reconstructed.  "There's no need to remove it, it was built to standards and it could be a future public street," Hayek …

When you do it 'right' - as per Keith's outline - you cut off 6 feet, then add 10 feet. Gonna cost more than simply adding 4 feet. May work better with the seam in a more desirable place, but oh, dear. Let's 'just leave it be' seems like a reasonable solution for today. If this 'driveway' is ever extended into a complete street, will they put in a jog to restore the correct line? Or just hold to …   more ›

UPDATE: Caledonia Adminstrator Says Four Mile Overpass Project Stalled

Union Pacific says they need some paperwork before two permits are issued.

Want to read more about this issue? "Like" the story with the Facebook button above. If we get 10 likes, we'll know to write a follow-up story. UPDATE JAN. 26: Tom Lebak, administrator for the Village, said the project has been delayed and the road likely won't open this year. Sewer and water work is being done, but officials with the Village wanted to start work on the railroad. The problem is that the Village doesn't have two permits they need from Union Pacific to go on their property. "We don't have those permits. We keep trying and trying and trying..." Lebak said. "There is something about a track plan that they say they don't have that we're trying to track down. But our engineer said we submitted that as part of our overall plan …

UPDATE: Village Board To Talk About Highway 38 Realignment And Ad Hoc Committee

Now the DOT says, let's reevaluate.

UPDATE Nov. 14: At 7 p.m. July 15 at the East Side Community Center, 6156 Douglas Ave., the Village Board will discuss alternatives for the realignment of Highway 38, which includes a potential jurisdictional update of Four Mile Road. They also want to reconsider the 2035 transportation plan. Original story: The County Board doesn’t want Highway 38 rerouted and neither does Caledonia Village Board, but some residents say they want a new road. And now, amongst the confusion and lack of support, the project has now been put on hold by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and will be reevaluated in January, a process that can take up to a year. According to a story by the Racine Journal Times, the County Board voted unanimously at their…
