Six Films To See at the Milwaukee Film Festival

A member of the festival's program committee gives his recommendations.

Labor Day weekend marked the release of the Milwaukee Film Festival's Program Guide. The annual fest begins Sept. 22 and is set to feature more than 100 films from the Milwaukee area and around the world. Over 11 days, these films will play at four area theatres - The Downer and Oriental on Milwaukee's east side, Ridge Cinema in New Berlin and North Shore Cinema in Mequon. Over the summer, I had the great honor of serving on Milwaukee Film's Program Committee. We met twice weekly and screened over 50 films, which we judged in hopes of narrowing the festival's selections. Not every film we watched was great, but some of them were. Especially strong this year is the crop of entertaining and powerful documentaries. Here are my favorites, …

Caledonia Mom Uses Ratings to Help Her Decide on Games and Movies

Parents can face tough situations when it comes to play dates and sleepovers.

The digital age brings so many advancements to our lives and our children’s lives. Teachers can set up online assistance programs to help struggling students catch up. If they forget their reading book it's okay, it’s online. The power for good is amazing but the power for bad also exists. Online experiences have a risk for our children; parents lying to create facebook accounts for children too young to have one, predators online, vulgar comments. The online warnings are all around us, but what about limiting video games and movies by ratings? As a parent, I honestly do not care what you find acceptable for your child. I would care if you showed my child those things which may be above his maturity level. Every child is different and has …

Movies to Watch with Your Sweetheart

Our best picks so you can focus on watching the movie and not search for a movie.

Valentine's Day falls on a Monday this year, probably the least romantic day of the week. And there's still the day before Valentine's Day to consider. How about just grabbing some popcorn and popping in a movie? Besides, now that the Super Bowl is over, long months of Sundays stretch into what seems like infinity. Or at least until September when the season gets underway again.  In any case, these are good movies for snuggling on the couch while it's still winter and snow blankets the ground. Sweet Home Alabama - Melanie is an upcoming fashion designer in New York City and is engaged to the mayor's handsome son. She's looking forward to marrying the man of her dreams ... as soon as she goes back to her hometown in Alabama to divorce her …
