After missing the Holiday Train in 2011, more than 1,000 community residents turned out to welcome the train back to help support the Racine County Food Bank.
Once again, the Racine-area community has stepped up for our neighbors in need. A crowd of about 1,200 turned out in damp, chilly weather Saturday to cheer the CP Rail Holiday Train and make big donations to the Racine County Food Bank. Total contributions come to 2,164 pounds of food (the record of 2,939 in 2005) and we hit a record of cash donations of $2,855.19. Dan Tailvalkoski, executive director of the Racine County Food Bank, sent an email to Patch Sunday morning with the totals. The money is combination of cash collected at the train and larger contributions from the railroad, Chicago law firm Freeborn & Peters LLP, and Racine Emergency Physicians, S.C. Sturtevant Police Chief Sean Marschke said he had an unofficial count of 1,200…

The Patch Tent at Mount Pleasant Village Hall is the official drop-off point for donations for the Racine County Food Bank.
The Mount Pleasant-Sturtevant Holiday Food Drive officially kicks off Monday and runs through Dec. 14. Patch's big, green tent is the collection point, in the lobby of Mount Pleasant Village Hall. Last year, when we found out the Holiday Train wasn't stopping in Sturtevant, a group of folks from both villages got together to plan a food drive to try and fill the void. We had Santa arriving on a fire truck, face painting, live music, an ornament-making station and an amazing refreshment center of cookies, hot cocoa and coffee. All-in-all, we raised over $1,000 in cash and collected almost 1,700 pounds of food for Racine County Food Bank. CP Rail also contributed a $1,000 check. This year, the Holiday Train is stopping Sturtevant, but the …

The entire community is invited Saturday to bring donations of food and/or money for the Racine County Food Bank to the CP Rail Holiday Train in Sturtevant.
Santa pulls into Sturtevant Saturday accompanied by live musical entertainment on a brightly wrapped, full-size locomotive. The CP Rail Holiday Train is set to arrive at 5:55 p.m. at the Amtrak Depot in the Renaissance Business Park to help support cash and food donations to the Racine County Food Bank. In 2011, the train passed Sturtevant, and a group of officials from both Mount Pleasant and Sturtevant stepped up to host a holiday food drive in its place. But in September, CP Rail announced the train would return. "We'll arrive when it's dark so the train will be fully lit up," she said. "We're happy to return to Sturtevant to help give back to the communities we travel through every day," said Christine Short, a CP Rail representative. …

Once again, the Mount Pleasant-Sturtevant Holiday Food Drive will benefit the Racine County Food Bank. This year, though, it's a week-long event and not just a day!
A group of Mount Pleasant and Sturtevant residents invites the entire community to its 2012 Holiday Food Drive for the Racine County Food Bank. The Mount Pleasant-Sturtevant Patch tent will serve as a collection point at Mount Pleasant Village Hall Dec. 10 - 14, 2012. In 2011, the Holiday Train pulled into Milwaukee instead so a group of residents from both Mount Pleasant and Sturtevant organized a holiday food drive to fill the void. Santa arrived on a fire truck to hand out candy canes to kids of all ages, and the community came out in force to donate over 1,600 pounds of food and more than $1,000 in cash. CP Rail, recognizing the need for support continued even without the train, also contributed $1,000. Now, though the Holiday Train …

Food and cash donations are both up for 2011, but Dan Taivalkoski said that doesn't surprise him.
Despite the way the Great Recession has hit Racine County east of I-94, neighbors have answered the call and provided the donations needed. Dan Taivalkoski, executive director of the Racine County Food Bank, said that he fully expects the tallies for both product and cash donations for 2011 to exceed what was given in 2010. "The Greater Racine community always answers the call for help and this year was no different," he told Patch on Dec. 30. "But I really am not surprised. That's what we do here." Still, times are tight and every item and dollar is both needed and appreciated. What put the cash donation total over the top was a recently received anonymous donation. "That one surprised us and really made our day," Taivalkoski said. The …

Wind gusts over 30 mph prompted organizers to move the Food Drive inside.
The weather outside is a little frightful, and while Santa might be used to gusting winds, organizers of the Mount Pleasant-Sturtevant Holiday Food Drive thought visitors will prefer the warmth of indoors. All residents are invited to the Food Drive tonight, Dec. 15, from 7 to 8 pm at Mount Pleasant Village Hall, 8811 Campus Drive. South Shore Fire Chief William Bouma put together a committee of volunteers to help stock the shelves of the Racine County Food Bank once he learned the Holiday Train was not stopping in Sturtevant. Music from True Life Ministries and the Smiler Grogan Case jazz trio will provide the festive back-drop for enjoying goodies donated by the Washington Avenue Piggly Wiggly, face painting and balloon decorating by …

Christopher Ruud of Sturtevant-based Ruud Lighting is the 2011-2012 fundraising campaign chairman.
Using his love of racing to frame the new United Way campaign year, Christopher Ruud at Ruud Lighting helped kick off the new fundraising effort on Sept. 8. The organization has an ambitious goal, asking for $5.25 million, a five percent increase over the 2010 goal, which United Way didn't meet. "This is our largest campaign ever," said Dave Mauer, United Way executive director. "We were short of our goal, but I think we'll make it this year." Ruud echoed the sentiment. "I actually have two goals with this campaign," he explained. "I want to increase giving by five percent to meet the goal that Dave has set. But I also want to increase participation by five percent." Saying he understands that not everyone can afford to give money to …

Part one of a two-part series; we will examine numbers specific to Mount Pleasant, Sturtevant and Caledonia next week.
A recent Gallup poll released today, Aug. 11, shows that nearly one in four American families in 2010 struggled to buy food. Here in Racine County, generally speaking, the need has been steadily rising as opposed to a sudden and prolonged spike, according to Dan Taivalkoski, executive director of the Racine County Food Bank. He added that, luckily, donations of food and money have also risen, but not enough to create a little wiggle room. "We are very fortunate that as our needs rises, so do our donations," he said. "When we put out the word that we need, Racine County responds. Having said that, we are handing out as much as is needed so there's no cushion in case donations do fall off a bit." According to a study by the United Way, …
