No Burn Order for All Racine County Parks

Racine County Executive Jim Ladwig issued a no burn order Thursday because of the danger of campfires or cooking fires turning into something hotter and much more dangerous.

Campers looking forward to a night of roasted marshmallows or folks looking to cook out during a picnic at a Racine County park are going to be disappointed. Because of the extremely dry conditions at most parks and the state Department of Natural Resources declaring a "very high" fire danger, Racine County Executive Jim Ladwig Thursday issued a burn ban at all Racine County parks. “Preventing the spread of unwanted fires in Racine County parks and campgrounds for the safety of campers and others is of utmost priority,“ Ladwig said. The DNR definition of "very high" fire danger means conditions are dangerous for fires that start and spread quickly and are very difficult to control. Signs will be posted that say: Dangerous fire conditions …

Volunteer Group Now Has Agreement To Lease River Bend

For quite some time, officials with the YWCA were trying to sell the River Bend Nature Center and in February they sold it to Racine County. But officials said they really didn't want to run a park, so a volunteer group formed River Bend Nature Center Inc

It’s official; the River Bend Nature Center now has a new owner and operator. The YWCA purchased the property in 1959, but they recently wanted to sell the property because it no longer fit their mission. Earlier this year, Racine County bought it, but officials didn't really want to run a park. Now, a newly formed non-profit group - the River Bend Nature Center Inc.  - will lease the property from the County for a nominal cost and operate the facility. Spearheaded by Roger Chernik of Mount Pleasant and several members of other conservation groups, their primary purpose will be to keep the facility open and offer a wide variety of programs. The County is leasing the River Bend to Chernik’s group on a 10-year renewable lease, which requires…

River Bend was, and will be again, a lovely asset to the community. I and many people I know have fond memories of buckwheat pancakes, cattails, and walking on trails looking at the lovely scenery. Thank you so very much to all those who have put their time and effort into restoring this valuable resource.   more ›

At Sanders Park, Walk Slowly and Breathe Deeply

Sitting on the southern border of Mount Pleasant, Sanders Park is another County Park that offers visitors a chance to walk in nature.

In 1930, Racine County became the owner of the land we would later know as Sanders Park after its dedication in honor of local biology teacher, Edwin Sanders. Beautifully forested with ancient basswood, black walnut, sugar maple, shagbark hickory and other native trees, the park surely was worth preserving. Sitting on the southern edge of Mount Pleasant, Sanders Park is beautifully laid out with a one-way rectangular road that runs counter-clockwise through the park. On the outside of the road you’ll find various picnic areas and a playground area for children. One of the picnic sites contains a beautiful rustic shelter containing an open-hearth fireplace. The northwest corner of the property hosts a campground with 42 campsites and ample …

Cliffside Park: A Lakeside Oasis for Man and Beast

Caledonia and Mount Pleasant-Sturtevant Patchers have two great county parks right in their backyard. Today, Cliffside. Tomorrow, Sanders.

Nestled along Lake Michigan in the northeastern corner of Racine County lies 233 acre Cliffside Park. Located at 7320 Michna Rd. the park boasts picnic areas, including two picnic shelters, and a 92 site campground for anything from tents to large RV’s. Water and electricity are available in the campground as are restrooms with showers. The park provides room to run and play with playgrounds for younger children and baseball/softball diamonds, soccer fields and basketball and tennis courts for the inner-child in the rest of us. For bicyclists, the Racine County Bike Path can be accessed with a short ride south to 6 Mile Rd. North and east of the campground, there’s room for nature lovers to roam. With ample wildlife viewing opportunities …

Do not go to the park expecting to play any tennis. They are overgrown with weeds through the cracks, the nets weren't even put up last year or this year, and the fencing around it is rusted. They have turned into an eyesore.   more ›
