Who's running for Racine School Board? What do they stand for? And what else do you want to know about these six candidates?
Voters will choose from a field of six candidates to fill three spots on the Racine Unified School board on April 2. In the primary in February, Mike Frontier came out on top with a total vote count of 4,082, or 14 percent of the total ballots cast. Incumbents Chris Eperjesy and Julie McKenna round out the top three with 3,235 (11.26 percent) and 2,897 votes (10 percent), respectively. The top six vote-getters will advance to the April general election. Also in the top six are Robert Wittke, Jr. (2,737, or 9.53 percent), Roger Pfost (2,416, 8.14 percent) and Kristie Formolo (1,704,or 5.93 percent). Ohio St. Voters in the Racine Unified School District will head to the polls on Feb. 19 to narrow down the field of candidates running for three seats on the School Board. Want to know who's in the lead?
With tallies in from 100 percent of the polling places in the Racine Unified School District, incumbents Kim Plache, Gretchen Warner and Don Nielsen led the Racine Unified School Board primary race all evening. However, all six candidates—Scott Brownell, Gretchen Warner, Kim Plache, Roger Pfost, Brian Dey and Don Nielsen—will all advance to the spring election, which will be held April 3. In Caledonia, 3,860 people voted in the primary election while 4,491 people voted in Mount Pleasant, and 401 people voted in Sturtevant. Plache, Nielsen and Warner earned the top votes in all three communities. Caledonia had 97 outstanding absentee ballots. Don Nielsen waited for the results at the District office. Brian Dey, who is running for a seat on the Racine Unified School Board, said he's disappointed that teachers passed out postcards endorsing three incumbents on school property while school was in session.
UPDATE: Jack Bernfeld, executive director for the REA-REAA, said palm cards were distributed to their union members prior to the work day starting on Monday. Students weren't in school on Monday because it was a staff development day. The cards reminded people to vote and listed the three incumbents names, which the REA Political Action Committee endorses. "We weren’t doing this during work time and we communicate with our members in a variety of ways," he said. "I’m not aware of anything happening on Friday. I’m not sure if individuals were doing it, or if there was something else going on, but we were not as an organizations in the schools on Friday." On Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012, six eligible candidates will be on the ballot for the Racine Unified School District Board of Education. Here's what you'll need to know.
When residents head to the polls for the Feb. 21 primary election, they need to remember to have with them a photo ID. This is the first election since the Voter ID was passed last year that requires all registered voters to show a government-issued photo ID in order to cast a ballot. Polling hours will be held 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Positions on the ballot: Racine Unified School Board (Vote for no more than three candidates). The positions are non-partisan. Student and parental engagement, neighborhood schools versus charter schools and magnet schools, and solving a budget shortfall topped the list of topics discussed at the Patch/WGTD candidate forum. Brian Dey, Gretchen Warner, Don Nielsen, Scott Brownell and Roger Pfost attended a forum held at the Mount Pleasant Village Hall on Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012. Ed seems to me to be trying to make a point here, but everyone seems to be ignoring it. If a large portion of the failing kids don't care about school, and if their parents don't care about their kids succeeding in school, then there's no leverage.
