Bicyclists Take To The Road In Silence

A number of local bicyclists rode in a six-mile "Ride in Silence" to raise awareness of bicycle-related crashes and deaths.

A group of bicyclists met up at the Regency Mall Wednesday night to do the Ride of Silence, a six-mile ride that honors those who were killed or injured while riding their bicycles. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the event, which serves to remind drivers to keep an eye out for cyclists and share the road. Bicyclists from all over the world participate. The ride started in 2003 after Larry Schwartz, an endurance cyclist, died after being struck by a school bus, according to a story in the the Dallas Morning News.

I agree drivers need to be more aware of cyclists on the road. However, I'm sick of some idiot draped in spandex driving along a highway on their bike and expecting me to take my life in my hands to pass them. There are plenty of bike trails and residential areas that are better fit to serve their need. And parents should be arrested for riding with their kids on the highway. If it comes down to …   more ›

Update: City Plan Commission MIA, Buffalo Wild Wings Rescheduled

The iconic restaurant is looking at a space on Durand Avenue in front of Regency Mall, but the lack of a quorum at a scheduled Planning Commission meeting means company representatives have to come back on March 13.

**Updated 7:30 a.m. Feb. 28 Sports and wing lovers, your rejoicing about Buffalo Wild Wings opening in Racine may have to wait a little longer. The Journal Times is reporting that a lack of a quorum Wednesday for a required public hearing with the city Plan Commission pushes the restaurant's opening back a few weeks.  Only Attorney Elaine Ekes was in attendance while other members of the commission were out of town, rehabbing a house and didn't hear their phone ring, sick, plowing snow or driving a child somewhere. But, seven people from BW3 - as it's commonly known - were able to attend from various locations throughout the Midwest. According to Jill Johannack, associate planner for the City of Racine, the company is looking at the …

BW3s will be good... we will use that regularly if it comes... just as we tend to do Texas Roadhouse nearly weekly. There is a reason why my family eats at some places regularly and others nearly never at all:... quality food and service for decent prices. Fail on any of those and we either will visit less, or stop visiting at all. We used to do Lone Star a few years ago, but the quality went …   more ›

Ssshhh! Black Friday Shoppers are Sleeping it Off

Not only are people recovering from turkey and stuffing overload, but many are also recharging after a long night of really early Black Friday shopping.

We are used to seeing the lines and miniature tent villages outside many retailers on Black Friday. But each year, it seems the lines begin earlier and earlier, and now it appears stores did not want to wait for the tryptophan to wear off before opening their doors to credit-card carrying crowds.  Patch reported Thursday about a patient line of customers waiting for Best Buy to open at midnight, but many other stores had sales starting even earlier. Shopko re-opened at 8 p.m. while Walmart had big sales scheduled for 8 and 10 p.m. and midnight. Target had a huge line for their 9 p.m. opening, and the line for Kohl's Department Store, which opened at midnight, snaked down the sidewalk in front of other shops in the same strip center. …

Same Sex Kiss In Doesn't Really Pucker Up

After a crowd of about 4,000 mobbed Chick-Fil-A Wednesday for a national appreciation day, mall security was ready for another over-flow crowd, but it just didn't quite get there.

National Same-Sex Kiss Day was supposed to have been a splashy protest to rival the support for Chick-Fil-A, but it never really puckered up. Organized on Facebook, the national kiss-in invited same sex couples and gay marriage supporters to meet at the Chick-Fil-A nearest their home at 7 pm and pucker up. The event was in response to comments made by Chick-Fil-A President Dan Cathy about his support for traditional marriage and Wednesday's appreciation day started - also on Facebook - by former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee. After an estimated 4,000 people visited Chick-Fil-a at Regency Mall in Racine Wednesday for the appreciation day, mall personnel prepared for another overflow crowd Friday for the kiss-in. "We were totally …

No one seems to understand that unless the police, FBI, sherriff, mayor or any other government entity shut down a Chick-Fil-A or intereferd with his business or if the mall management shut him down then its not a violation of his right to free speech. Only under those circumstances would Mr Cathy"s free speech be in jeopardy. People are allowed to respond to speech anyway they choose even …   more ›
