State GOP Official: The Medicare Debate Is A Debate We're Happy To Have

Officials from the state GOP visited the Victory Center in Mount Pleasant Monday to rev up support for the presidential campaign. Brian Schimming, vice chairman of the Republican Party of Wisconsin, said Medicare is one of the key issues.

Republican Party of Wisconsin Vice Chairman Brian Schimming and former State Sen. Van Wanggaard stepped off of the Romney/Ryan bus as about 30 Republican supporters cheered their arrival Monday at the Victory Center in Mount Pleasant. Schimming joked about how well Mitt Romney supporters, and even non-supporters, responded to the bus. Romney, the GOP presidential nominee, picked Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin), 10 days ago and the Romney/Ryan bus stopped in Racine on Monday. “We went by the occupy place there in Madison and I gotta hand it to them, they came up with a whole new way to say we’re number one with the one fingered salute,” Schimming said. “…But I gotta call it ‘Bus-force one.” Schimming said he would give President Barack Obama a…

Wisconsin U.S. Senate Race Roundup: July 11

Here are the latest updates from the campaign trail in the race to be the next U.S. senator from Wisconsin.

Leading up to the Aug. 14 primary, Patch will regularly bring you the latest news from the campaigns for Wisconsin's U.S. Senate seat in play this election cycle. Thompson Maintains Lead in New Poll; Hovde Gaining A new Marquette University Law School poll released Wednesday shows that former Gov. Tommy Thompson remains the frontrunner in the Republican primary but newcomer Eric Hovde is coming on strong. Thompson is in the lead among likely GOP primary voters with 35 percent to Hovde's 23 percent. In June, the same poll had Thompson at 34 percent and Hovde at 14 percent. GOP candidates Mark Neumann and Scott Fitzgerald each garner 10 percent or less in the latest poll. Patch's Heather Asiyanbi has a complete story on the poll, including …

Wisconsin U.S. Senate Race Roundup: July 10

Here are the latest updates from the campaign trail in the race to be the next U.S. senator from Wisconsin.

Leading up to the Aug. 14 primary, Patch will regularly bring you the latest news from the campaigns for Wisconsin's U.S. Senate seat in play this election cycle. Wisconsin GOP, Thompson Blast Baldwin on New Medicare Ad Democratic Senate candidate Tammy Baldwin's latest ad, which rails against cuts to Medicare and Social Security, is drawing cries of dishonesty from Republicans. In the ad, titled "Rock," Baldwin says her upbringing by her grandparents taught her the value of those programs for the elderly. "When people in Washington talk about slashing Medicare benefits instead of asking millionaires to pay their fair share, I know it's wrong," Bladwin says in the ad. Republicans were quick to respond. After the ad was released Monday, the…

'Protest' Candidates to Remain on Recall Ballots

The Government Accountability Board rejected a challenge filed last week by the attorney for the Democratic Party of Wisconsin.

All candidates, including those dubbed “fake” or "protest” candidates, will be allowed a spot on the recall election ballots next month. The Government Accountability Board determined Tuesday that six Republicans running as Democrats in an effort to set up elections on the same day throughout the state, are eligible for the ballot, unanimously rejecting a challenge filed by the Democratic Party of Wisconsin. The Board rejected the challenge 6-0, leaving in place a list of candidates who will appear on the May 8 primary ballots. In a statement on the Republican Party of Wisconsin's website, Communications Director Ben Sparks said: "We're pleased with today's certification that all protest candidates will appear on the May 8 primary ballot. …

Will the Real Candidates in the Recall Elections Please Stand Up?

Could Wisconsin politics get any weirder? Wait, don't answer that question. Now, we've got a Republican primary because Arthur Kohl-Riggs, a guy running as a "progressive Republican" has thrown his hat into the ring.

Arthur Kohl-Riggs, a scruffy-haired 23-year-old political activist who used to serve pizza at the Children’s Museum in Madison until a few weeks ago, says he is not a "fake Republican." But he’s not a traditional Republican, either. Kohl-Riggs is running against Gov. Scott Walker in the Republican primary after he collected and turned in more than 2,200 signatures to the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board this week. If the GAB, which oversees elections in Wisconsin, votes to allow him on the ballot, Kohl-Riggs will be Walker's sole opponent in the May 8 primary. So, if he’s not a Democrat or traditional Republican, what political flag does Kohl-Riggs fly? He describes himself as a “progressive Republican,” following the political …

He seems pretty genuine to me. He is certainly more informed then the other candidates. Give the guy a shot. I suspect he would be popular among students at the very least. The republicans opened themselves up to allowing an underdog to actually have a chance in the primary. I doubt there will be many crossover votes. If people vote for him, then they agree with him.   more ›

State GOP to Run Phony Candidates in Senate Recall Races

Residents of the 21st Senate District could be forced into voting during a primary if the Republican Party of Wisconsin runs what it's call a protest candidate to challenge former state Sen. John Lehman in primary.

Whether an independent candidate collects the necessary signatures to put his name on the ballot for the recall election in the 21st Senate District probably won't matter when it comes to a primary election. In a press release on the state party's website, Executive Director Stephan Thompson said the reason for running protest candidates is so elections line up on the same day across the state. The state Government Accountability Board has set the primaries for May 8 and the general election for June 5. In races where there is no primary, May 8 would serve as the general election. "The protest candidates will run as Democrats to guarantee that there is one clear date for the primary election and one clear date for the general election,"  …

TOTAL RECALL: State Senate Showdown

Social Media Changing the Landscape in Wisconsin's Recall Elections

For the most part, challengers are more savvy than incumbents when it comes to Twitter and Facebook.

When state Sen. Alberta Darling sent out this tweet to her nearly 360 Twitter followers, she didn’t use a penny of the more than $1 million in campaign cash she has raised so far. “Check out this editorial from the Journal Sentinel about the complaint filed regarding Citizen Action and my opponent http://ow.ly/5U8jF,” the River Hills Republican incumbent tweeted. Darling’s Democartic opponent in Tuesday’s 8th District recall race, state Rep. Sandy Pasch (D-Whitefish Bay), fired her own missile with this tweet, “UPDATE: WHAT IS SHE HIDING?: New Details Emerge in Alberta Darling Coverup http://dld.bz/ajWCV.” Candidates tossing out accusations against their opponents is nothing new in politics. But in an era where social media is playing a …

Instead of getting us out of those two, he increased troops in Afganistan and started involving our military in a third. nitwit? ya think?   more ›
