There are a ton of beautiful places to get walking in Caledonia. Here's how you can start moving and where to do it.
April 3 is National Walking Day, an excercise awareness day that the American Heart Society that asks people to take at least 30 minutes out of their day to get up and walk. A former secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources will speak at the River Bend Nature Center April 2.
On the heels of mining reforms passed earlier this month, the River Bend Nature Center will host a lecture on Wisconsin mining regulations. George Meyer, executive director of the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation and a former secretary of the state Department of Natural Resources, will speak at 7 p.m. April 2 at the Nature Center, 3600 N. Green Bay Road. Meyer will discuss the bill and "how new policies and regulations need to protect our natural resources and public health while allowing safe extraction of our mineral resources," according to a Racine County Conservation League news release. He has previously criticized the bill, saying it would harm the environment as well as the public's ability to give input. Meyer has worked in …

River Bend's executive director says grant money will help Racine County children use technology to connect with nature.
A state grant will fund the purchase of Global Positioning Systems to be used at River Bend Nature Center. River Bend was recently awarded the $400 Barbara Beetow State Grant from the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority. The GPS units will help engage children visiting River Been through observations, problem solving, trekking and geocaching, according to a River Bend news release. "We are extremely grateful for the support and generosity of Alpha Delta Kappa," River Been Executive Director Jeanne Dernehl said. "The grant will help the children of Racine County use technology to connect to nature and engage them in a way that requires creativity and problem solving, while having a good time." The former director of the Small World Montessori School, Jeanne Dernehl, is now leader of the River Bend Nature Center.
A Caledonia resident has been hired as the new executive director of the River Bend Nature Center. Jeanne Dernehl was most recently the director of the Small World Montessori School in Racine and has also been co-director of Discovery World in Milwaukee. She has extensive business start-up experience and a strong commitment to environmental education, according to a River Bend news release. "We are very happy and very pleased to announce the hiring of Jeanne Dernehl to lead our staff, volunteers and our organization,” said Roger Chernik, president of the board of directors.
