Sex Offender Discovered Living in Caledonia Near Two Schools

A Caledonia detective conducting an investigation on an unrelated case happens to find a sex offender living close to two schools. Police Chief Toby Schey said the find exposes a problem with the state's sex offender registry program.

If a detective with the Caledonia Police Department hadn't inadvertently found Peter T. Baumeister — a registered sex offender — living near two schools in the Kremer subdivision, he probably would still be living there. Caledonia Police Chief Toby Schey said police would have never known about the man if not for the work done by the detective, but this case highlights a communications gap between the state's sex offender registry system and the department. Baumeister, 37, of Caledonia, is a sex offender who was convicted of aggravated sexual assault of a child in Texas. He had been living in a residence in the 1500 block of Ellis Avenue, in the Kremer subdivision, since February. He pleaded no contest to the charge in 2004 and served six …

Then why do they even have the law? Maybe it should be changed if it's not going to be enforced. You're so naive to think "treatment" will do the trick. These ppl are sick in the head and have screwed up a kid's life. I don't feel sorry for them at all for being uprooted and being forced to have unstable. They aren't worthy of any type of compassion. They should pay for life. Their victim is …   more ›

Convicted Sex Offender Will Live on Memorial Drive

Michael Fink will move back to the City of Racine by March 7.

Convicted sex offender Michael Fink will become a resident of Racine once again, Racine County Circuit Court Judge Eugene Gasiorkiewicz ruled Thursday. The court hearing was to determine that an acceptable residence has been found and that the parties agree on a release date. Fink will live in a single-family home at 1605 S. Memorial Drive on or before March 7. Fink has been incarcerated since 1994, when he was convicted of sexually assaulting two, 12-year-old girls who were babysitting his stepchildren. After his prison sentence was up, the state successfully petitioned for him to be committed to the Sand Ridge Secure Treatment Center in Mauston as a sexually violent offender under the state's 980 civil commitment procedure.   Fink was to…

Judge Tells State to Quickly Find Home for Sex Offender

Convicted sex offender Michael Fink is still going to be released under strict supervision, but finding a new location for him should be the DHS's highest priority, according to Judge Eugene Gasiorkiewicz.

Racine County Circuit Court Judge Eugene Gasiorkiewicz told state Department of Health Services officials Thursday to make finding a new placement for convicted sex offender Michael Fink one of their highest priorities. The status hearing was scheduled after the state Attorney General's office and DHS officials discovered that Fink's proposed residence at 918 Lathrop Avenue was only a block or two away from one of his victims. Fink was to have been released from Sand Ridge Secure Treatment Center in Mauston into a supervised release program by Friday, but that has been put on hold until a new home for him is found. Fink was first convicted of second degree sexual assault in 1987 for attacking a 15-year-old girl. He spent time in prison for…

Caledonia man hires a contractor he found on Craigslist to put in a patio, but the contractor turned out to have a warrant out for his arrest because he's a sex offender whose probation was revoked in Kenosha County.

A Caledonia man unknowingly hired a convicted sex offender from Craigslist to do a construction job, but the job never got started. Robert Brown, 38, of Burlington, is suspected of contractor theft after he allegedly took off with the Caledonia man’s money and didn’t do the work. After the man filed a complaint, a detective with the Caledonia Police Department learned that Brown’s probation status was revoked in Kenosha County and he currently has a warrant out for his arrest.
