School Vouchers And Funding Dominate State Budget Hearing

The expansion of the school voucher program next year brought out several school administrators—from private and public. But some parents want to see the special education scholarship program pulled from the budget.

A number of people spoke about the school voucher program at the Joint Finance Committee hearing on the state budget held Thursday at Greendale High School. The hearing was the first of four being held around the state to give residents the chance to have their say on Gov. Scott Walker’s 2013-15 budget. After the hearings, the committee will vote on any changes before sending their version on to the Assembly and Senate. One private school official asked for more money from the state while a public school board member called for stiffer regulations for private schools and more funding for public schools. And, one parent called on Legislators to increase funding for special education for public schools and to pull out a provision in the …

Thank you Kristie. From both my professional and parent background, I am well aware that an IEP is no replacement for parental involvement. I am responsible for how my son is educated. On the same token, I have to cooperate with teachers to make an IEP that is workable and realistic. But if a problem or concern arises, and communication breaks down, I have that IEP be my son's advocate. Puts us "…   more ›

St. Catherine's High School Will Not Accept Vouchers

School officials say they may participate in the future, but not for the 2011-2012 school year.

Racine Unified parents who were hoping this fall to send their high school freshman to St. Catherine's High School with a school choice voucher will have to wait or try another school. Christopher Olley, president of the school, said today, July 22, that while school officials see value in the program, they're going to adopt a "wait and see" policy for now. According to a story in The Racine Journal Times, a release from St. Catherine's stated there just wasn't enough time to fully educate and inform teachers and the Board of Directors. School choice is available for the 2011-2012 school year for 250 Racine students who are …

Quoted - "There just wasn't enough time to fully educate and inform teachers and the Board of Directors." Time to educate and inform about WHAT? A student is a student regardless of voucher or not. Bad decision, St. Catherine's, turning your back on prospective students in need of an education - Christian values? - I think NOT!   more ›

St. Catherine’s Senior Awarded Herb Kohl Initiative Scholarship

Matt Sadowski plans to study film at Columbia College.

Matt Sadowski of Racine said he sees what some might have viewed as an insurmountable challenge as a gift. The senior at St. Catherine High School has been recognized for overcoming an obstacle and for other strengths, as a recipient of the Herb Kohl Initiative Scholarship. He is one of 81 Wisconsin students to receive the $1,000 scholarship. “I was selected by the guidance department for this, and it’s given to a student who has not yet been awarded another financial scholarship, or has overcome a significant obstacle,” Matt said. “It was always kind of difficult for me sometimes to relate with others because I have Asperger’s Syndrome, which for some people, makes you very withdrawn.” Whiz Kid's Name: Matt Sadowski Whiz Kid's School: St…
