Assembly Votes to End All Night Sessions

State lawmakers say they want to change the rules to make government more transparent.

**Updated 10 p.m. The State Assembly Thursday voted to end all night debate sessions in an effort, lawmakers said, to make government more open. Speaker Robin Vos, R-Rochester, and Majority Leader Scott Suder (R-Abbottsford) introduced the measure during the first full day the Legislature is in session after the November elections. “At the end of last session, numerous constituents, colleagues and even the press talked to me about ending the overnight Assembly sessions, so that our debates could be more open and transparent,” said Vos in a written statement. “These marathon sessions don’t serve the members or the citizens of this state well.” Leaders from both sides of the aisle signed on to a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that spells …

Reps Split Along Party Lines When It Comes to New District Maps

The GOP leaders in Madison have redrawn voting districts with maps that could be challenged in court.

If the new maps drawn by state GOP leaders remain intact, most residents of Mount Pleasant, Sturtevant and Caledonia will get new state representatives in both legislative houses. According to the maps released on Fri., July 8, one senate district will be created that essentially extends from the northern border of the City of Racine to the southern border of the City of Kenosha and includes Elmwood Park, Somers and parts of Mount Pleasant. Another senate district will be created for the suburban and rural portions of the rest of both counties. "Under this plan, I would be representing new areas," said Van Wanggaard, state senator for the 22nd District, which includes the City of Racine, Mount Pleasant, Sturtevant and Caledonia. "That …

If the proposed conceal carry bill becomes law, the only other state in the union not to allow conceal carry would be Illinois. The Senate version of the bill passed this week. The Assembly is set to vote on in the measure either Tuesday or Wednesday. We came up with a number of questions, researched the Assembly version of the bill (AB 126) and talked to local law enforcement officials about the bill. Here’s what we found: If passed, what would the conceal carry law do? The law would: Can you carry a loaded uncased handgun in a vehicle? The bill lifts many of the requirements relating to transporting firearms and dangerous weapons if you are a licensee, qualified active duty military or former law enforcement officer you are transporting …

Vos’ View from the State Capitol

Job Creation Agenda on Fast Track

A number of measures move closer to becoming law.

Wisconsin taxpayers have many reasons to smile.  Republicans have passed a package of bills that will put Wisconsin’s economy on the right path.  The GOP jobs agenda will not only change the business climate in the state, it also will bring tax relief and jobs to Racine County and Wisconsin. Governor Walker’s “Open for Business” Special Session is illustrating that yes, Republicans really do mean business. Business owners will soon have a great incentive to operate their business in Wisconsin.  The Republican-controlled Assembly passed a two year tax holiday for businesses relocating to Wisconsin.  This is a perfect measure for job creation because our neighbors to the south just approved a 67 percent increase in the personal income tax …

Greta, Getting back to the jobs issue, that web site, http://www.windenergyplanning.com/, announces that Siemens is about to build an off shore wind farm near Devon, England, that will produce a slew of 'green' jobs, both in construction and operation. As long as Wisconsin is not open for wind farm business, we won't have to consider such possibilities. How about siting some about 3 miles out in …   more ›
