Caledonia Businessman Developing $1.2 Million Project in the City

Akil Ajmeri is building a combination gas station and Subway restaurant complete with a drive-thru, the first in Southeast Wisconsin for the sandwich shop chain.

For Caledonia businessman Akil Ajmeri, life is about family and community, and he's been able to build his business with a focus on strengthening both. Ajmeri is at it again with a new, $1.2 million development in the City of Racine at 1130 Washington Avenue. The new project will combine a gas station, convenience store and a Subway restaurant with the first drive thru in Southeast Wisconsin for the restaurant chain. An additional retail space is also planned as part of the building. "My business is all about family and about building a stronger community," Ajmeri said at the official groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday. The gas station will be named for his older daughter, Ayra, while the Subway will be named for his younger daughter, Ayman…

Introducing Southeastern Wisconsin's Theoretical Subway System

Do all theoretical subway lines lead to Milwaukee? On this map they do. But what do you think?

So these kids up at UW-Madison, (well, OK so they aren't really kids) came up with a handy dandy map of what a Milwaukee subway system might look like, according to a blog on JS Online. The map represents an interesting connectedness between southeastern Wisconsin communities, sort of remniscent of the KRM concept, but broader. And because there are college students involved, you know there's beer. Here's how this map idea got legs. Meg Jones wrote: Matt Forrest, a University of Wisconsin-Madison grad, was drinking suds with his friend Tom Shield at the Y-Not II Tavern last summer. Forrest and his business partner, Kate Chanba, met in a web map design class their senior year at UW and had recently opened Carticulate, a cartography business…

Would you mass transit utopia Moonies sqauwk if a mass transit rail system or subway was built between Antigo and Greenbay? Or how about between the Wisconsin Rapids and Stevens Point? Of course you would because you'd wind up paying for it one way or another yet probably never use them. You'd whine about needing it more then they would. In fact your whining about this idea right now. The problem…   more ›

Coca-Cola And Subway Want To Give Away Money Towards Parks

Looking for that ever popular park that needs a little TLC, Coca-Cola and Subway want you to tell them which parks should get $100,000. This made me wonder, which parks in Caledonia could use a little sprucing up?

Caledonia has some great outdoor recreational spaces. But is there a park in Caledonia that could use a little extra help? Coca-Cola and Subway are looking to give away money for "America's favorite park" and I thought it would be interesting to start a discussion about which parks in Caledonia might fit that bill. Take a look at our list of parks and recreational areas in Caledonia (be careful because there are a few of them in our directory that are just outside Caledonia). Lets do a little dreaming about what we could do with that money and I'd love to see some photos of your favorite parks. I'd love to see some of the parks in Caledonia get that money. Click here to learn how to campaign for your favorite park.

Denise, there used to be a canoe launch that we installed when I was President through a grant that Wendy McCalvy applied for. Unfortunately, it got washed away in the ame flooding that eroded the road at Gorney.   more ›
