Construction May Not Be Booming Here, But It's Certainly No Bust

Times have been tough for our economy with manufacturing and construction jobs coming to a screeching halt five years ago, but things are gathering steam and businesses are starting to expand.

Manufacturing and construction jobs are slowly returning to Caledonia, Mount Pleasant and Sturtevant. But we're certainly not out of the unemployment trough created by the Great Recession over the past five years, according to a story on NPR, Five Years Of A Brutal Job Market, In Two Graphs. The story and graphs paint a dismal picture, with the national unemployment rate hovering at 15 percent, another 5 percent of people working part time and some who have given up looking for work. Texas Roadhouse, Red Lobster Adding 320 Jobs to Mount Pleasant

The two restaurants open about a week apart and are looking to fill 160 positions each.

Editor's Note: We had the wrong web address for applying to Red Lobster. It should be www.redlobster.com. A new banner will go up on the new Red Lobster, and we regret the error. After months of waiting, Mount Pleasant's two newest restaurants are just about ready to open their doors. Which, of course, means they need employees. Texas Roadhouse is scheduled to welcome its first diners on March 5. Red Lobster is scheduled for March 12, but both restaurants need about 160 employees, most of which will include flexible scheduling. If anyone is interested in serving what is being touted (see the sign on the door) as "the best steaks in Mount Pleasant," they can visit Texas Roadhouse starting Mon., Jan. 30, to fill out an application. …

In many of these restaurants, servers and other workers are highly taken advantage of. They schedule far too much staff to make it profitable and why not - they only have to pay them 2.33 an hour. At 2.33 an hour they are not only waiting tables, they are doing much of the side work in the kitchen. On slowest nights they will keep on a full staff because it doesn't hurt them. They give the …   more ›
