Reaction Rolls in on Walker Recall Win

Why the recall results ended up in Scott Walker's favor depended on which side of the aisle you stood on.

As the evening - and the recall efforts that have held the state's attention for nearly a year and a half - came to a close, various groups offered their opinions on why the results fell so heavily in Scott Walker's favor. And as usual, they fell along party lines. State Democratic Party Chairman Mike Tate told WisPolitics that despite his party's loss, they had no regrets over the recall effort, and chalked it up in part to funding of each campaign. “They have millionaires and billionaires that can write checks and take out TV ads,” Tate said. “This should not have even been a contest considering how much they spent. Rob Zerban, who is running against Republican Congressman Paul Ryan, was a bit more blunt. “Today we saw the buying of an …

Barrett Visits Racine to Thank Supporters: 'I'll Take Racine Any Day'

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett visited Racine today just four hours after the polls opened for Wisconsin's historic recall election. He thanked the hours of work volunteers and supporters have put in over the last 18 months.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett visited the Racine Labor Center today to thank supporters for the hours they've put into the historic recall efforts. "So many for so many months have put in an incredible amount of work to make our democracy work for us again," he said to a small crowd of volunteers who took a break from canvassing to catch a moment with him. Barrett compared the gubernatorial recall effort to a boxing match. "In one corner you have Gov. Walker and his tens of millions from out of state," he continued. "And in the other corner you have Barrett and he has you. I tell you, though, I'll take Racine any day of the week over a billionaire from Texas." During his remarks, Barrett also made sure to thank former Sen. John Lehman for …

Mr. Engel - Umm... I believe I made it clear in my comment above that Barrett's assertions that it was Walker that is divisive and caused a civil war amongst the people of Wisconsin is the LIE that I was referring to. Barrett's boxing analogy is very divisive rhetoric. When did you ever hear Walker using such rhetoric on the campaign trail during this campaign? Such divisive rhetoric practically …   more ›

UPDATED: Voter Turnout in Milwaukee Suburbs Climbing Toward 50 Percent

State elections officials predict turnout of 60 percent, but some local election officials say the number could go higher.

State election officials were estimating turnout for Tuesday's election at 60-65 percent, but it appears suburban Milwaukee communities could smash that mark. Patch is compiling anecdotes and voter counts from throughout the area. If you have news to share of high turnout or your experience at the polls today, Tweet us @SEWisconsnPatch or email milwaukee@patch.com. Shortly after noon at McKinley Elementary School in Wauwatosa, 600 of 1,340 registered residents in Ward 17 had voted, or 45 percent, the highest figure in a sampling of voting sites. Shorewood Village Clerk Sherry Grant said turnout was close to 50 percent in the entire village before 2 p.m. "I think we are going to exceed what the state has been predicting (for voter turnout…

Walker Backers Call Foul by Milwaukee Police in Freeway Bridge Eviction

Group says Milwaukee police harassed them and ordered them to get off footbridge over I-94, while those holding Barrett signs were allowed to remain on another bridge.

A group of supporters of Gov. Scott Walker is claiming harassment by at least one Milwaukee police officer and preferential treatment for backers of Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett after an incident Friday evening on an interstate highway footbridge. During the incident, they said, a 16-year-old boy was singled out and handcuffed in front of his father, and held there until all the adults left the bridge. A member of the group took a video showing that the police could not immediately come up with any reason for evicting them before eventually locating an ordinance against loitering. But another video taken the next night by Barrett supporters on another Milwaukee bridge shows members of that group reading their legal grounds to Milwaukee …

Recall Rematch: Record Voter Turnout Expected in High-Stakes Election

Experts talk about the impact of polling, fundraising and turnout in the state's first-ever gubernatorial recall election.

This Tuesday will not only mark Wisconsin's first gubernatorial recall election, it will also mark the end of the most high-profile, expensive and politically-polarizing race this state has ever seen. Ever since Gov. Scott Walker unveiled his plans to eliminate most of the collective bargaining rights of public sector employees, the nation has turned its eyes to Wisconsin, of all places, as thousands protested on the Capitol, 14 Democratic senators left the state to stop the bill, recall elections were waged against six Republican senators and two Democratic senators, the results of a highly-partisan judicial election between Joanne Kloppenburg and David Prosser were reversed and recounted, and more than 900,000 signatures were collected …

The days of giving the Native Americans alcohol, shiny beads or small pox infected blankets were long gone by the founding of the Republican party or Conservatism.
