Mason, Weatherston Introduce Bill to Protect Child Sex Assault Victims

Isabella's Law would make it a condition of bail that defendants in child sex assault cases not be allowed to live at adjacent addresses or within 250 feet of their alleged victims.

When Jimi Street's daughter told him their neighbor touched her inappropriately, he was understandably upset. But, when the man was released on bond and returned to his Racine home right next door, Street was outraged. Reps. Cory Mason (D-Racine) and Tom Weatherson (R-Caledonia) wanted to help the Street family and prevent this from happening to others. Their bipartison legislation - Isabella's Law - would make it a condition of bail for defendents that they not live less than 250 feet or at an adjacent property from the homes of their alleged victims. They held a press conference Monday on the steps of the Racine County Courthouse to announce their co-sponsorship of the proposed bill. "Let me be clear. This isn't for a conviction, this …

Richard Head is absolutely 100% correct here. I am disappointed that Tom Weatherston fell for this feel good legislation. C'mon Tom it's nice to find something "bi-Partisan" for politics sake. but this is so obviously unenforceable, and is a camels nose into the tent. Suppose you or your kid are accused of stealing from a neighbor. and the same rule would apply; You could be forced from your own …   more ›

Weatherston Praises Passage of Wisconsin Mining Bill

The freshman representative from Caledonia says the mining bill, which is on its way to becoming law, will create hundreds of new jobs throughout the state.

State Republicans say the newly passed mining bill will mean good things for the entire state, not just the area in northern Wisconsin where the mine will operate. State Rep. Tom Weatherston (R-Caledonia) issued a statement after the Assembly voted to pass the bill, 58-39. He praised passage of the bill because the mine will create jobs in Southeast Wisconsin. “Wisconsin needs jobs, and a new mine is expected to bring hundreds of good paying jobs, not just in northern Wisconsin, but also here in southeast Wisconsin,” he said. “This bill will lead to the creation of new jobs while still keeping strong environmental protections in place.” Calling Thursday's passage of the state mining bill "irresponsible," Assembly Minority Leader Peter …

I did not deny the guy was callous, but just was wondering where Cathryn got her info. It is important to know someone's source. Unfortunately these mines can be very dangerous, and I fear we may be in for some environmental consequences on this one. The other side claims there is nothing to worry about. They won. I guess it is too late now. We can't do anything about Weatherston anyway. Look how…   more ›

Weatherston Introduces Turner Syndrome Awareness Month Resolution

Rep. Tom Weatherston, R-Caledonia, co-authored a resolution declaring February as Turner Syndrome Awareness Month in honor of a little girl with the disease.

February could officially be Turner Syndrome Awareness Month, thanks to a resolution passed Tuesday by state lawmakers in Madison. The measure was co-authored by Rep. Tom Weatherston (R-Caledonia) and Sen. John Lehman (D-Racine) and passed the Assembly. Once it passes the Senate, which it is expected to do, February will become Turner Syndrome Awareness Month. Turner Syndrome affects one out of 2,000 women in the U.S. According to a written release from Weatherston's office, "(Turner Syndrome) is a disorder caused by a missing or incomplete X chromosome, and can result in severe complications such as heart or kidney defects, diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, and scoliosis, among others." Caledonia resident and Weatherston's …

Vos, Weatherston, Mason Take Oath in Madison

Now that lawmakers are all sworn into office, the Legislature can get to work.

Rep. Robin Vos, R-Rochester, is now Speaker Robin Vos, and Tom Weatherston is officially Rep. Tom Weatherston, R-Caledonia. Both took the oath of office Monday at the Capitol Building in Madison. This is Vos' 5th term representing the 63rd Assembly District and Weatherston's first term. He is also a trustee in the Village of Caledonia. In a written statement after he was sworn in, Vos said he is looking forward to members of both parties working together, and that the first order of business will be reforming Wisconsin mining laws. “I’m optimistic that Republicans and Democrats can come together to find the best solutions for Wisconsin’s future,” Vos said in the release.  “We all must put aside our differences in order to bring more jobs …

Letters to the editor

Weatherston Thanks His Supporters After Election

Tom Weatherston writes a letter to the editor thanking his supporters for electing him to the 62nd Assembly seat.

I would first of all like to thank the people of the 62nd District for giving me the chance to represent them in the Wisconsin State Assembly. Voters in Wind Lake, Raymond, Caledonia, Racine, Wind Point, North Bay, and Mt. Pleasant went to the polls last Tuesday and made their choice. I am honored by their decision and I will work to represent all of the citizens of the district. I would also like to thank all of my supporters and volunteers who made this possible. I could not have done this alone and I am grateful for their continued support. When the Legislature starts its new session in January, I will get to work immediately on bringing jobs to Racine County, reducing government waste, and keeping taxes low. Working with my new …

Weatherston Wins 62nd District Race, Vos and Wirch Retain Their Seats

In the state legislative races, the races didn't finish up until later in the evening. But here's where things were at by 11:45 p.m.

Despite the Republicans having a dismal night in the presidential race, they held a strong lead for the state assembly by 11:45 p.m. Tuesday.  However, Bob Wirch (D-Kenosha) garnered more votes than Republican Pam Stevens in the race for the redistricted 22nd State Senate seat. Wirch said he was able to harness a lead because of his track record. “I have a reputation of being an independent Democrat fighting for the underdog and it doesn’t hurt you when you get a better Democrat district.” –when asked why he had success in this election Incumbent Robin Vos (R-Rochester) looked like he would maintain his 63rd State Assembly seat against political newcomer Kelly Albrecht (D-Burlington) and Tom Weatherston (R-Caledonia) also held a strong …

Plans Moving Ahead for Congressional, State Legislature Debates

The 2012 fall election season is in fulll swing. Patch and WGTD Radio are working together to sponsor debates for the major races in our area, including Rep. Paul Ryan's re-election race in the First Congressional District.

**Updated 1 p.m. Sept. 25 Patch and WGTD Radio are busy hammering out the details for two debates next month; one featuring Rep. Paul Ryan and challenger Rob Zerban and a second highlighting the six candidates up for three state legislature seats. On Sept. 11, we issued a formal invitation to both Ryan and Zerban to attend a live debate at 7 p.m. on Oct. 25. Since then, Zerban has confirmed he will attend, and Ryan’s campaign has said they can’t confirm Ryan’s attendance just yet. Still, they are willing to work with us so residents get to hear from both candidates. “I would be glad to discuss any alternatives so voters can hear where Congressman Ryan stands on the issues of importance in this election,” said Kevin Seifert, Ryan’s campaign…
