UPDATE: Melissa Lemke Wins the 62nd District Assembly Primary Race

Shortly after 11 p.m., the final results came in for the 62nd Assembly Race, confirming Melissa Lemke the winner of the Democratic primary.

All precincts in the 62nd Assembly District have reported and Melissa Lemke is the winner. She will face Republican Tom Weatherston in November. Melissa Lemke: 1,198 Randy Bryce: 521 Lemke fininshed the primary with about 63 percent of the vote. Results are unofficial until they have been certified by the Board of Canvassasrs, which is expected to meet this week. After the results were announced, Lemke said she was thankful for the voters who came out to vote and for earning their trust. "Randy ran a clean campaign and I appreciate all the work he's done, and I look forward to meeting more residents of the district and earning their trust as well as we head into November," she said. As for how she'll run her campaign heading into the fall…

Lemke And Bryce Missing A Number Of Their Campaign Yard Signs

Two Democratic primary candidates for the 62nd Assembly District have noticed that a number of their campaign yard signs have mysteriously disappeared today.

A number of campaign signs were discovered missing from where Democratic candidates Randy Bryce and Melissa Lemke say they put them over the course of several weeks. Bryce and Lemke are the Democratic candidates for the 62nd State Assembly District, which includes Caledonia, the northern part of Racine and a small part of Mount Pleasant. Between the two of them, they’ve lost more than 80 signs. Tom Weatherston, Village Board member and the Republican candidate for the 62nd State Assembly District, said he didn’t know anything about the missing signs, but said when he first started his political career he lost a lot of signs because he was putting them in the road right of way. “I lost some signs that way and I had to get them from County…

Primary Election Preview: Wisconsin State Assembly, 62nd District

Iron worker Randy Bryce faced educator Melissa Lemke in Tuesday's Democratic primary in the 62nd Assembly, while Republican Tom Weatherston is unopposed.

Democratic voters in the newly created 62nd Assembly District will choose between political newcomers on the primary election ballot on Tuesday.   Randy Bryce, a 47-year-old iron worker, who lives in Caledonia will face Melissa Lemke, a 30-year-old public health educator and researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee who resides in Racine. The top vote-getter will all but certainly take on Republican candidate Tom Weatherston of Racine in the November election. Weatherston is unopposed in Tuesday's primary. The district, which had its boundaries redrawn as part of the redistricting process, now includes Caledonia, some of Racine, and some of Mount Pleasant. Here's where the candidates in the Democratic primary stand on several key…

Signs Added at 5-Mile and Nicholson Road Intersection

The driver of a semi-truck died after trying to avoid crashing into a car at Nicholson and 5-Mile Road over Memorial Day. The village is now taking steps to make the intersection safer.

A fatal crash between a car and semi truck driver that happened over Memorial Day weekend has served as an impetus for the village to make the intersection safer. At the Public Works Committee meeting last week, Village Board member Tom Weatherston asked to staff make the intersection of 5-Mile and Nicholson roads a four-way stop or to at least have signs under the existing stop signs stating that traffic on Nicholson Road does not stop. Board member Jim Dobbs said there have been five accidents at this intersection in the past three years and said he felt a sign under the stop sign would work, according to minutes from the meeting. Blaine Pfeffer, superintendent of the Highway Department, said signs stating that cross-traffic does not …

Im sorry but you cant fix stupidity. There are alot of stupid people out there driving a vehicle that can wreck havoc on unsuspecting drivers. Most people do not drive defensively and are not aware of their surroundings. The person who posted that there should be a 4-way stop is one of those stupid drivers. Are you kidding me putting a 4-way stop on a major highway that's speed limit is 50 mph is…   more ›

New Village Administrator's Contract Approved, But Just Barely

Three of the seven Village Board members voted against approving Mark Janiuk's contract -- not because they don't think he can do the job, but because of the Village's residency requirement.

In a 4 to 3 vote, the Village Board approved a contract for Mark Janiuk, the new village administrator, at its Tuesday meeting. The approval was made despite the dissenting votes. The three Board members who voted against Jaiuk's contract said their decision wasn’t a reflection of how they felt about Janiuk’s ability to do the job. However, Tom Weatherston, Kevin Wanggaard, and Lee Wishau all voted against approving the contract because Janiuk, who lives in Racine, won’t be moving to Caledonia. After the vote, Janiuk sarcastically said, “Thanks for the vote of confidence.” “We had an ordinance that said you have to live in Caledonia and on two separate occasions I asked if we were going to enforce the Village’s residency requirement …

It would have been short-sighted on the Caledonia board's part if they would dropped the ball on this one. You will find that no matter where Mark goes home to at night, he will do his best for Caledonia. His track record in Sturtevant is beyond reproach, and you are getting one heck of an Administrator.   more ›

62nd Assembly District Race Is On

A total of four candidates are vying for a position in the newly formed 62nd Assembly District and yes... there's probably going to be a primary.

A Democratic primary election has become a possibility for the newly redistricted 62nd State Assembly seat now that a second Democratic candidate has announced their candidacy. Randy Bryce, 1718 Dale Drive, announced his bid for candidacy this afternoon. “With the current volatile political atmosphere in Wisconsin, I seek to build bridges so that all of the people in the State can have their voice heard," Bryce said. "Our government should be accessible, transparent, and, accountable.  I seek to stop giving breaks to those who can afford it while the majority of working America keeps being told to make more sacrifices. I refuse to accept cuts to our services while property taxes are raised.” Bryce, 47, of Caledonia, is a political …

Police Union Heads To Mediation Over 2012 contract

For four months, the union representing 26 police officers has tried to negotiate with officials from the Village of Caledonia. Now they are at an impasse.

Patrol officers with the Caledonia Police Department and village officials will meet with a state mediator on Thursday to help them resolve issues with their 2012 contract. The two sides have been negotiating since November. If they are unable to agree and mediation fails, officials with the 26-member Caledonia Professional Policemen’s Association Local 403 of the Wisconsin Professional Association (WPF) will go to arbitration. The village is also still in closed-session negotiations with 35 union-represented employees of the Caledonia Fire Department. Officials with the Wisconsin Professional Police Association have not returned calls to Patch and local union members with the police union are not talking publicly about what the sticking …

Weatherston Announces Bid For 62nd State Assembly Seat

Tom Weatherston, of Caledonia, currently serves on the Caledonia Village Board and he's throwing his hat in the ring for the position. The lines for the 62nd State Assembly District have been redrawn, but they are currently being challenged in the courts.

Tom Weatherston, a Caledonia resident, today announced he will run for the 62nd State Assembly District. The position will be up for election on November 6 and is a two-year term. Cory Mason (D-Racine) currently holds the job, but hasn’t officially said he’s going run for his seat again. Late last year, Mason said he might run for the office of Lt. Governor, but he has not made any decisions. “It is premature to comment on any opponent when we don’t know the outcome of redistricting,” Mason said. “I am still considering options, but until we know where the lines will be, it’s hard to make any comment.” The current district comprises part of the City of Racine, most of Mount Pleasant and all of Sturtevant. The Republican-drawn maps, which …

Voicing A Few Concerns, Village Board Seems To Favor Siena Project

Once completed, the independent living apartments, assisted living apartments, skilled nursing and memory care facilities will be owned and overseen by Siena Partners, Inc. with Lincoln Lutheran as managers. Officials told the Village Board they want to g

The Village Board and the Plan Commission learned that officials with Siena Partner Inc. want to start building a $45 million senior living campus in July. At a meeting held Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012 at the Siena Center, Sister Sharon Simon, OP, explained, how the Racine Dominicans came to partner with Lincoln Lutheran on the project. "We wanted to see how we could make this a continuing care community for the greater Racine area, Caledonia, and Racine County," Simon said. Dan Risch, CEO of Lincoln Lutheran, said Siena Partners wanted to “provide another option for seniors, who wanted to be in a stimulating learning environment. That would include a place for them to live and to play, study, to worship, to contemplate.” The construction …

Caledonia Likely To Require Businesses To Pay More For Road Projects

The proposal has been drafted by the Legislative & Licensing Committee to have road reconstruction projects paid for by businesses.

If a road in front of a business needs to be ripped up and reconstructed, the business owner will likely see a slightly bigger bill for the project. Caledonia is one step closer to requiring industrial and commercial property owners to pay more for road reconstruction projects. The Legislative and Licensing Committee will recommend to the Village Board next week that they make adjustments to their special assessment policy to pay for Village road reconstruction projects. “The policy won’t be substantially different for residents, but it’s definitely more aggressive for the other business uses,” said Elaine Ekes The policy would require industrial, commercial, manufacturing and institutional businesses owners to pay 100 percent of road …
