Another 'Kenya' Video Surfaces with Tommy Thompson's Son

Days after a video was released showing Jason Thompson joking about sending Barack Obama back to Kenya, another video is leaked revealing he has made the comment at least one other time.

Tommy Thompson's U.S. Senate's campaign has taken some heat this week after the former governor’s son said the upcoming presidential election is an opportunity to send President Barack Obama back to Kenya. But it turns out it's not the first time that phrase has come up during a GOP rally featuring Jason Thompson. In a video obtained by the Huffington Post, Jason Thompson tells a group of supporters at a rally in Fond du Lac on Oct. 6: "We have an opportunity to send President Obama back to Chicago." The crowd responds with cheers and a few audience members yell out, "Back to Kenya." "That would even be better," Jason Thompson joked. The video was recorded by a Democratic tracker, HuffPo says. It came out a few days after the first video …

Thompson Calls Baldwin 'Anti-Jewish' for Stance on Iranian Sanctions

Strong words address congresswoman's changing votes on Iranian sanctions, but former governor goes farther in questioning Baldwin's support for the Jewish people.

In a wide-ranging attack on his opponent in the U.S. Senate race, Republican Tommy Thompson on Sunday called Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin "anti-Jewish" and "anti-Israel." It was far stronger language than Thompson had previously used in charging that Baldwin had repeatedly voted against having the U.S. impose sanctions on Iran before consistently voting for them only since beginning her Senate campaign. "Tammy Baldwin, her whole record is anti-Israel," Thompson said at a press conference in Wauwatosa. "She voted for the first time for the sanctions three months ago because she knew she was running for the U.S. Senate. That is the lamest excuse I've ever heard. "She's anti-Israel, she's anti-Jewish and she's trying to now somehow …

Election Preview: Wisconsin U.S. Senate Race

Former Republican Gov. Tommy Thompson is squaring off against Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin in a bid to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl.

Former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson is taking on Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin for the chance to represent Wisconsin in the U.S. Senate — taking the seat now held by Democrat Herb Kohl, who is retiring in January. The race has drawn national attention and endorsements because Republicans have a shot to wrestle the seat away from Democrats. Depending on outcomes in other states, the November election could help give the GOP control of the Senate. Although Thompson was leading Baldwin after his August primary election win, the Madison congresswoman has been in the lead in the most recent polls. In its analysis of the race, the nonpartisan RealClearPolitics.com says: "Baldwin received quite a bump in the polls in the wake of the …

Down in the Polls, Thompson Blasts Baldwin in First Debate

Former Republican governor says his Democratic opponent in U.S. Senate race is too liberal; she claims he represents special-interest groups in Washington.

Trailing in the polls, former Gov. Tommy Thompson went on the attack Friday night against U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin in their first debate for the U.S. Senate race. Republican Thompson portrayed his Democratic opponent as a “taxer and a spender” who is outside the mainstream, according to WisPolitics.com. My opponent is so far to the extreme even her party doesn’t pass any of her legislation," Thompson said. The Associated Press reported that Thompson spent most of the debate on the attack, casting himself as a visionary reformer and branding Baldwin "a taxer and a spender." "When you don't have a record, you attack the other person," he said. "I get things done. I don't criticize the other side. I make sure things happen." Baldwin wasn't shy…

Fitzgerald Now Top Choice of GOP Insiders, Thompson Still Best to Beat Baldwin

Among Wisconsin's influential conservatives, Jeff Fitzgerald now has plurality support over Tommy Thompson, Eric Hovde and Mark Neumann, but they still see Thompson as their best bet for defeating Democratic candidate Tammy Baldwin in November.

In the primary season, a lot can change in a month. A recent Patch survey of influential Wisconsin conservatives proved just that. A plurality of Wisconsin Republican insiders now favor Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald for their party's U.S. Senate nominee, according to the unscientific survey. Fitzgerald has generally polled behind former Gov. Tommy Thompson and businessmen Mark Neumann and Eric Hovde throughout the race. In fact, a similar Patch survey in mid-July of the same political insiders showed Hovde as the favorite with Thompson close behind and Fitzgerald trailing at 10 percent, a spread that mirrored most representative polling data. Thursday's survey, which asked for whom the 53 respondents would vote if the election were held…

Primary Election Preview: Wisconsin U.S. Senate Race

Former Gov. Tommy Thompson, businessman Eric Hovde, Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald and former congressman Mark Neumann square off in GOP primary for Wisconsin's open U.S. Senate seat. Democratic U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin is unopposed.

A highly contested GOP primary for the U.S. Senate nomination culminates Tuesday, with four Republicans vying for their party's nomination to take on Democratic Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin in the November general election. The race has pitted the four GOP hopefuls against each other as they campaign for the six-year seat being vacated by Sen. Herb Kohl, who is retiring. The race has drawn national attention and endorsements because Republicans have a shot to wrestle the seat away from Democrats. Depending on outcomes in other states, the November election could help give the GOP control of the Senate. Former Gov. Tommy Thompson, businessman Eric Hovde, Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald and former congressman Mark Neumann are vying for their…

Hovde Top Choice of GOP Insiders, But Thompson Fares Better Against Baldwin

In Patch's first political insiders poll, GOP Senate candidate Eric Hovde is the top choice among the state's influential conservatives. But those same conservatives believe former Gov. Tommy Thompson has the best chance to beat Democrat Tammy Baldwin.

Wisconsin's Republican insiders like candidate Eric Hovde in the U.S. Senate primary election, but they think former Gov. Tommy Thompson has the best chance to win in November. That's the bottom line of Patch’s inaugural “Red Wisconsin” survey of GOP party leaders, activists and other "influencers." If the Aug. 14 primary were held today, the insiders say they would vote for Hovde by a substantial margin over both former Gov. Tommy Thompson and Mark Neumann, according to the survey. But those same influencers believe Thompson has the best chance against Democrat Tammy Baldwin in the November general election. In the survey conducted by Patch, nearly 36 percent of respondents said they would support Hovde if the GOP primary were held today…

Neumann-Backing PAC's New Ads Blast Thompson, Hovde

The D.C.-based Club for Growth political action committee launches negative ad campaign against the two frontrunners for Wisconsin's US Senate seat.

As Republican U.S. Senate candidates Tommy Thompson and Eric Hovde pull to the front of the field, a conservative political action committee Friday launched an ad campaign attacking the two frontrunners. The Washington, D.C.-based Club For Growth PAC, which has endorsed Mark Neumann in the Senate race, is airing a 30-second ad that portrays Thompson as a tax-happy former governor and says that Hovde is "Only Worse," the ad's namesake. According to the TV spot, Thompson advocated nine tax hikes in his time as Wisconsin governor, and Hovde "supported tax-raising governor Jim Doyle." This ad campaign comes days after a new Marquette University poll shows Thompson and Hovde at the top of the four-man field for the Aug. 14 primary and Neumann …

Neumann: State's Ready for Conservative Leaders

U.S. Senate candidate Mark Neumann rides on Gov. Scott Walker's victory in the recall election to campaign against "wasteful, stupid spending."

Ready for another few months of campaigning and elections? Hours after Gov. Scott Walker won a historic recall election, U.S. Senate candidate Mark Neumann was at the Republican Party of Waukesha County headquarters in Waukesha where he said the election means the voters want a conservative leader “with bold ideas on how to balance a budget by cutting government spending and ending Obamacare.” “It is a fun, great day in Wisconsin. It is really fun to get up this morning and know the victory is about Scott Walker and his team and doing the right thing for this great state,” said Neumann in front of a group of his supporters. “What really is exciting is what it means for the future of the great state of Wisconsin. The message loud and clear …

Poll: Walker Would Win in a Recall Race; Thompson Frontrunner in Challenge for U.S. Senate Seat

In head-to-head matchups, Walker leads four Democratic challengers by 6 to 10 percentage points.

Against four Democratic challengers in a recall election, Gov. Scott Walker leads by anywhere from 6 to 10 percentage points, according to a new poll released this week. The first in a series of polls by the Marquette University Law School asked registered voters whom they would vote for in head-to-head matchups between the challengers and Walker.  The poll found that, in the hypothetical matchups with possible Democratic candidates to challenge in a recall election, Walker: The poll comes on the heels of recall organizers submitting 1 million petition signatures to the state Government Accountability Board, the agency that oversees elections, along with 450,000 signatures against Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch and another 80,000 in efforts …
