UPDATE: Bridge Work Set To Start Next Week On Four Mile Project

The project seems to be taking forever to complete, but here's the latest update from Mike Hayek, the Village Engineer.

Bridge building will begin on the Four Mile underpass project next week, said Mike Hayek, the village engineer. The project is meant to ease traffic congestion along the railroad tracks on Four Mile Road just west of Douglas Avenue and has been in the works since 2005. The underpass project was initiated because of a $2 billion We Energies expansion, which was completed in January. Progress has been made on the project, but the scheduled open date is now planned for July 2013. The road was originally closed in October 2011 and was set to complete by the end of this year. The project was delayed because the scope of the project had to be changed to include two bridges instead of one. They've also reduced the track shift from three to two. …

When Will Four Mile Road Open for Traffic?

For the past 10 months, Four Mile Road has been closed and residents were beginning to wonder if the project will ever be completed. Village Engineer Mike Hayek says, "Yes."

Despite being well aware of how long 4 Mile Road near the Union Pacific Railroad would be closed, some residents are starting to lose patience with the underpass project. Village engineer Mike Hayek acknowledged that while the project hasn’t been going fast enough for some residents, progress has been made, and the scheduled open date is planned for July 2013. The road was originally closed in October 2011 and was set to complete by the end of this year. However, the project, which is meant to ease traffic congestion along the railroad tracks on Four Mile Road just west of Douglas Avenue, has been in the works since 2005. The underpass project was initiated because of a $2 billion We Energies expansion, which was completed in January. …

Neighbors Angered Over Four Mile Road Project

Mike Hayek, the village engineer, said it could be weeks before excavation begins and the biggest hold up is Union Pacific, which just walked away from laying the track and that work was supposed to start in June.

About a dozen neighbors living near the Four Mile Road underpass project registered their frustration with the Village Board at a meeting Tuesday night. No action was taken, but several village board members and neighbors asked the village engineer if anything could be done to open the road back up. John Longo, 3112 Four Mile Road, expressed his frustration with the road being closed for six months with little work being done. "If you’re not going to work on it, I think it should be re-bid, or cover it up and forget the underpass," Longo said. Village President Ron Coutts explained the need for the overpass saying that We Energies expects to have two to four trains with 150 to 180 cars each in a 24-hour period, which has blocked traffic on…

When Will The Four Mile Underpass Project Gain Steam?

Probably not until next fall, said Mike Hayek, the village engineer.

Mike Hayek, Caledonia’s Village Engineer, called the Four Mile underpass project a “train wreck” because the project has yet to be bid out, again. The project, which is meant to ease traffic congestion along the railroad tracks on Four Mile Road just west of Douglas Avenue, has been in the works since 2005. The underpass project was initiated because of a $2 billion We Energies expansion, which was just completed in January. Once expected to be bid out this spring, Hayek told the Village Board at a meeting held Tuesday night that he doesn’t see the project being bid out until at least this fall. Hayek is still waiting to get the final two right of way acquisitions completed with the Union Pacific Railroad and We Energies. Once those are …
