Note to Wanggaard: Just Rip Off the Bandage Already

John Lehman has essentially won the Senate seat three times in one election. It is time for Wanggaard to concede.

Senator Mark Miller was recently quoted as saying, “Senator-elect Lehman won by more than 800 votes. It is time for Senator Wanggaard to concede and let the voters of the 21st Senate District have the Senator they chose. Any attempt to delay with court cases is irresponsible and a waste of time and money, not to mention a denial of democracy.” I could not agree more. As most of you probably know, John Lehman won the recall election on June 5, won (again) once the canvass was complete and yet again when the recount commenced on Monday. I think it is time to stop beating a dead elephant. Wanggaard and posse are claiming voter fraud and dragging Racine through the mud as they do it. Lehman said they are “insulting” Racine and that is exactly …

Recount Final Total: Lehman Wins By 819 Votes

The recount of the 21st District state Senate recall election ended Monday, however, Wanggaard is considering a legal challenge.

The recount in the 21st Senate District ended Monday, with Democrat John Lehman remaining the victor in the recall race against Republican Van Wanggaard. The final vote total: Lehman 36,358; Wanggaard 35,539, a difference of 819 votes. Racine County Clerk Wendy Christensen certified the results shortly before noon Monday and immediately sent the results to the state Government Accountability Board. "It shows that we won the election and all of these allegations of voter irregularities are false and are really much ado about nothing," Lehman said. "The results from election night have been proven correct through tape and tally totals." Lehman defeated Wanggaard in the June 5 recall election by 834 votes, in the only successful Democratic …

The only reason fraud isn't being found is because no one is actively looking for it! All of the same day registrations that were done at those wards that realized a 100% or greater increase in the number of ballots cast vs the 2010 general election should be looked at and visits made to those addresses to see if those people actually live where they said they do. If this was done, then I'm sure …   more ›

Recall Recount Day 9: Wanggaard Net Gain Still 20, Ballot Bags Still an Issue

More than 58,000 votes have been recounted in the much-watched 21st Senate District recall race. Republican Van Wanggaard's net gain remains at 20, leaving Democrat John Lehman up by 814 votes.

Ballot bags continued to be an issue Friday during the recount of ballots in the 21st Senate District recall election. Democrat John Lehman continues to hold a decisive lead — 814 votes — over Repubilcan Van Wanggaard. At the end of the night June 5, Lehman was declared the winner by 834 votes. Since the recount began on June 20, Wanggaard has picked up 20 votes. But, as was the case Thursday, questions arose about why some bags containing ballots were unsecure. As the ninth day of the recount was wrapping up, attorneys from both sides questioned City of Racine Deputy Clerk Donna Deuster about a bag from Ward 12 that was sealed with packing tape. Earlier Friday, Suzanne Matchie, the chief poll inspector from Ward 12, was called to the …

@morninmist - If Van challenges the certification of this election in court, which Hoffa hopes he does, a re-election should be ordered, just as when similar occurrences played out in the Pastrick re-election campaign of 1999 in the City of East Chicago, as what happened in the City of Racine on June 5, 2012 is that exact situation only on steroids!   more ›

Opened Ballot Bags Raise More Questions in Recount

Campaign officials for Van Wanggaard call for an investigation into why nine bags containing ballots were opened and then put in other bags.

Officials with Republican Van Wanggaard’s campaign Thursday questioned why a number of bags containing ballots from the City of Racine were opened and then "double-bagged," or placed in a second bag. Under Wisconsin's election procedures, after the polls close, election workers  remove the voted ballots and place them into a secured container or bag. The bag is secured using a tamper-evident numbered seal, according to the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board. Ballot bags are supposed to have all potential openings secured in such a manner that no ballot may be removed, nor any ballot added, without visible interference or damage to that ballot container. But Racine County Clerk Wendy Christiansen said that bags in nine of the 36 …

Recall Recount Day 7: Wanggaard Net Gain Moves Up to 20

About two-thirds of the votes in the 21st Senate District recall election have been recounted; as of 5 p.m. Wednesday, just more than 50,000 ballots had been completed.

Democrat John Lehman's lead over Republican Van Wanggaard remained sizable at the end the seventh day of the recount in the 21st state Senate District recall election. As of 5 p.m. Wednesday, just more than 50,000 votes had been counted and Wanggaard campaign representatives said their candidate had picked up net gain of 20 votes, bringing Lehman's lead down from 834 to 814. Workers were finished with the suburbs of Racine and were focused on city wards, eight of which were completed. Deputy clerks said another two or three could finish before Racine County Clerk Wendy Christensen declared the day closed. Lehman defeated Wanggaard in the June 5 recall election and Wanggaard asked for a recount on June 15, and the process started on June 20…

Recall Recount Day 6: Some Missing Signatures Recovered

After discovering on Day 5 of the recall recount that same-day registration signatures were missing in poll books from the City of Racine, pages of signatures have been recovered and process are in place to minimize any further issues.

A day after potentially hundreds of signatures from same day voter registrations were discovered missing, many have been recovered on different pages but still in the same poll book. Even in the case of a signature not being found, though, that resident's vote still counts per an instruction from the state Government Accountability Board. Democrat John Lehman defeated Republican Van Wanggaard in the June 5 general election for the 21st Senate District by 834 votes. Wanggaard asked for a recount on June 15 and since the process started on June 20, has picked up a net eight votes. Racine County Clerk Wendy Christensen confirmed that, for reasons chalked up to human error, in Ward 1 from the City of Racine, extra pages were in the poll book. …

Democrats Accuse GOP Poll Observers of Election Day Voter Intimidation

Complaints surface in Racne that election monitors — many from out of state — confronted voters at local polling places during heated recall election.

As Racine County Republicans cry foul over a number of alleged voting irregularities in June 5 recall election, local Democrats have raised allegations of their own — saying GOP poll observers tried to intimidate voters and violated state laws at a number of polling places. Complaints have surfaced in the media and blogs that Republican observers allegedly talked to voters and poll workers directly, and took photos and videos within polling places, which violates state law. They also followed get-out-the-vote vans around town and took photos of license plates, and followed one poll worker outside as she allegedly went door to door canvassing. Racine Mayor John Dickert said the main issues with polling observers was that they were not …

More Election Snafus Reported in Racine Recall Election

Voters who registered on election day are supposed to sign the poll book, same as any other voter. Now, though, pages of missing signatures have been discovered during the recount of the 21st Senate District recall election.

Republican recount observers are raising a red flag over votes cast by residents who registered on election day after pages of missing signatures from same-day voters have been discovered throughout the City of Racine. When someone registers to vote on the day of the election, poll workers take the completed registration form and create an entry in the poll book and then duplicate it in a second poll book. The voter is required to sign their entry in the same book other voters sign their entry in order to cast a ballot — and it's those signatures that are missing in some wards in the June 5 recall election. It's not known how many signatures are missing, but Racine County Clerk Wendy Christensen said there are entire pages of missing …

Businesses, Unemployed Can Start Applying for Wisconsin Workers Win

Wisconsin WINS pairs unemployed workers with local companies that need to fill full-time vacancies. Those interested can start applying now.

Coming out on top of this recession may hinge on getting a new skill set. Now, there's a program that can help bring willing unemployed workers together with vacancies at local businesses for a win-win. Wisconsin Workers Win is now accepting applications from employers who have vacancies and are willing to train a new employee. Unemployed workers who are willing to undergo training and move into a more permanent job can also apply. A story on FOX 6 Now Thursday confirmed the program is open. W3, as the program is tagged for marketing, started as Assembly Bill 450 and was co-authored by Republican Van Wanggaard (Racine) and Representative Mark Honadel (R-South Milwaukee). Gov. Scott Walker signed it into law in March. Here's how it works: …
