A small group of about 25 people gathered Friday afternoon at Monument Square to urge Congressman Paul Ryan to stay the course on immigration reform. Specifically, members of Voces de la Frontera and YES (Youth Empowered in the Struggle) want Ryan to keep backing reforms that keep families together, and they delivered a petition with over 7,000 signatures to Ryan's Racine office to back their point. Kevin Seifert, a spokesperson for Ryan, responded by saying, "Congressman Ryan has spoken about the need for immigration reforms that address the approximately 11 million undocumented individuals already here and that do so in a way that respects the rule of law." They also asked Ryan to stop using terms like "anchor babies," because doing so …

U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan plans to hold bilingual town hall meeting in June to take up the issue, saying he wants to fix the immigration system because it's broken, not for any political reasons.
Declaring that the nation's current immigration policy "doesn't work for anyone," U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan said Wednesday he is planning a bilingual town hall meeting in Racine in June to focus on the issue. While this wouldn't be his first bilingual meeting, Ryan's decision to focus on immigration comes at a same time the Republican Party is launching an effort to lure more Hispanic voters. In November, just 27 percent of Hispanics nationwide voted for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and running mate Ryan — and the GOP is trying to improve those numbers. It also comes as Congressional Republicans are divided on how to deal with the controversial issue. Some Republicans, like Ryan, want to make it possible for illegal immigrants …

Valeria Ruiz, an undocumented student who attends Case High School, will be among thousands who will rally in Washington D.C. for immigration reform on Wednesday.
More than 50 Racine area students and adults are traveling Washington D.C. for tomorrow's "Time is Now" rally for immigration reform. A send-off for the group was held Tuesday at the Racine Labor Center. Thousands of undocumented workers are expected to participate in the rally, which will be held on Wednesday. Racine's Youth Empowered in the Struggle group wants to join those putting political pressure on federal legislators and President Barack Obama to pass an immigration reform bill, which is expected to be introduced this week. Valeria Ruiz, a junior at Case High School and a member of YES, was among several speakers who told their story at Tuesday's event. "I'm undocumented and I am unafraid," she said. Ruiz talked about why it is …

Questions are being raised about where several computers are that were used to redistrict the state and Rep. Robin Vos was among those who received a subpoena.
Rep. Robin Vos (R-Rochester) and several other Republicans received a subpoena to testify in a state redistricting case being heard in federal court, according to a story in the Journal Times. At issue are several missing state computers, which allegedly contain evidence of how the 2011 election maps were drawn. Voces De La Frontera, an immigrant rights group based out of Milwaukee, is one of the plantiffs in the case. They argue that the redistricting "unfairly weakened Latinos’ voting rights in Milwaukee." According to a story in the Journal Sentinel, the subpoenas raise the question of "how many records were withheld and why" during the redistricting process. Every 10 years, states must draw new lines for congressional and legislative …

One Racine man says he feels like he's getting the golden ticket to his future thanks to a program that protects undocumented immigrants under age 31 from deportation, allowing them to work and obtain a driver's license.
For years, Paul’s friends didn’t know he was an undocumented immigrant. His family moved to Racine when he was 7 years old. He graduated with honors from Horlick High School. He drives a car and has a job. He’ll start taking classes at Gateway Technical College as a freshman this fall, then transfer to a four-year college and eventually continue his college education until he becomes a psychologist. People who know his story call him a Dream Act Dreamer or just Dreamer, which means his immigrant parents brought him into the United States illegally when he was a child. Paul is one of 300 people who came to the Racine Labor Center on Tuesday to learn more about the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and fill out an …

After the state's highest court refused to hear the cases, Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen said Tuesday he will appeal to the state's Supreme Court, asking it to overturn two Dane County judges' rulings that the law is unconstitutional.
State Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen is pushing to have the state's Voter ID law in effect for the November election cycle, once again urging the Wisconsin Supreme Court to overturn the rulings of two Dane County judges. The law requiring voters to present identification at the polls was in effect for the Feb. 21 primary, but was later ruled unconstitutional twice in one week in March by two separate judges, in response to suits filed by the League of Women Voters of Wisconsin, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in Milwaukee and immigrant rights group Voces de la Frontera. Van Hollen announced Tuesday morning he would ask the state's highest court to take up the two rulings, bypassing the state Court of …

A crowd of students left the Monday School Board meeting happy after the Racine Unified School Board agreed to set up a committee to study a 'Student Bill of Rights.' Part of YES (Youth Empowered in the Struggle) crafted the Bill and asked the school dist
A crowd of about 100 students and their teachers packed Monday’s school board meeting to voice their support for their Student Bill of Rights. Before they made their way to the Racine Unified Administration building, the group rallied at the Racine Labor Center. Participants are part of Youth Empowered in the Struggle (YES) and are supported by Voces de la Frontera. A total of eleven Racine Unified students and teachers stressed the importance of having student voices as part of the decision-making process in the district. Nearly every student who spoke made reference to the work a mixed group of students from Milwaukee and Racine Unified put into the Student Bill of Rights. Milwaukee Public Schools had a similar hearing last month. Sam …

The high court's decisions mean that the appeals court will hear the cases first. A trial that started today will continue.
The state Supreme Court Monday refused to hear Voter ID cases stemming from suits brought by two different plaintiffs. Justices issued one-page opinions on each of the lawsuits from the Milwaukee NAACP and the League of Women Voters, but declined to comment on why they refuse to hear either one, according to WisPolitics.com. A temporary injunction was issued first by one Dane County judge and a permanent injuction was issued by another. There is a trial that started today and now will proceed based on lawsuits filed by the Milwaukee branch of the NAACP and Voces de la Frontera. Both groups claim the law, which requires voters to show a photo ID before they can cast a ballot, disenfranchises minorities, the elderly, the disabled and …

Youth Empowered in the Struggle (YES) has been running voter registration campaigns in Racine Unified high schools and working on a student bill of rights. But you might be surprised how closely intertwined the group is with the pro-labor movement.
Handmade posters hung on the walls at Case High School last week encouraging students of legal voting age to register. In the past, an outside organizations reminded students to register to vote, but this year things are different as a student group called Youth Empowered in the Struggle (YES) is behind the voter registration drive. The trend of mobilizing young voters has worked well for Democracts since young voters tend to vote for Democratic candidates, but a blog called BigGovernment said YES is a "leftist movement group." But students and organizers said YES is a student social justice group affiliated with Voces de La Frontera and the group has 12 chapters in Milwaukee- and Racine-area high schools and three universities. Mike …

Frances Martin, your argument shows your naive mentality, as history is nothing but one group of people moving, settling, and fighting for space. Take your whining somewhere else, anywhere but the real world where the rest of us need to function. What an absolute joke.   more ›
