More than 200 union members line the street of Chicago suburb Friday to send message to controversial Wisconsin governor — and Republicans in the Land of Lincoln.
With chants of “Union busting is disgusting” and “Hey, hey, ho, ho, Scott Walker’s got to go,” more than 200 union members from Illinois and Wisconsin lined the entrance to a suburban Chicago hotel Friday evening where the Wisconsin governor was speaking. According to the Deerfield, IL, Patch: Gov. Scott Walker is speaking at the annual gathering of the Lake County Republican Federation at the Marriott Lincolnshire. The union members wanted to send a message to the local Republican lawmakers that Walker’s brand of politics is not welcome in Illinois. “What he did up there is not what we want here,” Northeastern Illinois Federation of Labor President Patrick Statter said of Walker’s efforts to reduce collective bargaining for public sector …
Gov. Scott Walker announced Friday that the state will give tax credits to a local business that will add 12 jobs over the next four years. He also responded to news that the state lost 4,300 jobs.
Coming off the heels of a poor jobs growth report Thursday, Gov. Scott Walker touted a small employment victory in Caledonia Friday morning. Walker highlighted a building expansion at Milwaukee Light Bulb Co., 4135 NE Frontage Road, this morning that would add 12 jobs over the next four years. The visit came after the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development reported the state lost 4,300 private sector jobs in February. The DWD also stated Wisconsin has added a total of 15,600 private sector jobs this year. The governor's Caledonia visit was one of many stops he made this week. He was met by protesters at Tuesday visits in Springfield, IL, and Troy, MI. He made another jobs-related stop on Thursday in Brookfield. And he is expected in…

Wayne Clingman and a man that goes by "wolf man" because he's wearing a wolf mask protest in front of the Racine Unified School District Monday. They are disappointed with the outcome of the re-election of incumbents and the performance of the District.
A grassroots rally starts with a few seeds. And the rally this morning by Citizens United For Personal Responsibility and Government Accountability included two men, Wayne Clingman and a man wearing a mask, who wanted to be called "Wolf man." The two wanted to express their disappointment that Racine Unified School Board incumbents, Kim Plache, Gretchen Warner and Don Nielsen were re-elected because of their allegiance to the teachers' union. More specifically they were frustrated with the influence of the teachers' unions on the election. The two men also want others to "recognize they (the School Board members) are incompetent at best and have failed to properly educate children," Clingman said. "...If I were working in a factory and 50 …

Mark Demet is accused of turning in petitions that contained the names of his neighbors, family members and one belonging to a dead man. According to court documents, Demet penned the names and turned them in during the recall drive.
A man accused of falsely writing in signatures on a petition to recall state Sen. Van Wanggaard — including one from a deceased person — was in court today and officially charged with nine felonies. Mark Demet, 59, of Racine, was charged by the Racine County District Attorney's Office with two felony counts of election fraud/nomination certification and seven felony counts of misappropriating identifying information for financial gain. If convicted on all charges, Demet faces up to 42 years in prison and fines up to $90,000. Court commissioner Alice Rudebusch found probable cause to move the case forward and a preliminary hearing has been set for 8:30 a.m. March 29, according to court records. Demet remains out of jail on a $2,000 …

Some fraud allegations were true, some were false, and some complaints will likely yield to an investigation. But there aren't enough to stop the recall from moving forward, state election official says.
The head of the agency that oversees elections in Wisconsin says there have been some instances of fraudulent signatures found on the petitions seeking to recall Republican Gov. Scott Walker from office. And with at least three outside groups going through the signatures looking for problems, Government Accountability Board Director Kevin Kennedy said his staff expects to hear even more allegations about possible fraud. While the GAB and other agencies will investigate all such complaints, it's unlikely there will be enough of them to stop the recall from moving forward, Kennedy said in a memo released Friday. "The highly polarized political atmosphere which has engendered the current recall initiatives has also generated a constant buzz …

Gov. Scott Walker said, among other things, that he supported extending unemployment benefits through a worker's unpaid training period.
Gov. Scott Walker addressed job growth, responsible mining and the pressing need for skilled labor on Tuesday while speaking to a full house of almost 300 people at the Milwaukee War Memorial Center. The Milwaukee Rotary Club sponsored the appearance, during which Walker fielded questions from an audience without a protestor in sight. The governor thinks so. Walker said he's noticed a trend among small manufacturers — while there are jobs galore available and employers are desperately in search of employees, there are just not enough people to fill these jobs with the right credentials. "One of the most frustrating things for me, is employers telling me that they have jobs, but they don't have enough skilled workers to fill those jobs, …

A growing group of Walker supporters hope to spoil Democrats' recall party by writing in the Republican's name in a potential primary.
In the “Wild West” political territory that is the Wisconsin recall elections, it seems anything goes. Therefore, it should probably come as no surprise that some supporters of Gov. Scott Walker have come up with a new plan to thwart efforts to unseat the Republican governor. Utilizing word-of-mouth and social media, these Walker supporters are encouraging voters across the state to write in the governor as a candidate in the Democratic primary — if the recall election moves forward. It started as a conversation on Facebook, but less than a week ago the page Operation: Write in Scott Walker in Democrat Primary popped up on the social media goliath, giving the movement an established spot on the web. In just more than a week, 772 people …

Clerk told Patch she was "confused" about new regulations, but audio file shared with Patch shows she did not mention that in her initial denials.
Village of Caledonia Clerk Karie Torkilsen thought she had more control over who could register voters in the Village when the law changed this year, but she didn’t. Torkilsen initially denied certification to four women who had applied to become Special Registration Deputies so they could register voters in the Village. The women told Patch that Torkilsen led them to believe she just didn't want to certify them to register voters, and several of them then filed complaints with the Government Accountability Board over her behavior. Torkilsen told Patch Wednesday she denied the requests because she was confused about the new rules and needed answers from the GAB. This week, Torkilsen deputized three people, Jane Witt, Kathleen Laru, and …

Patch took a look at what a potential statewide recall election would cost local municipalities.
UPDATED: 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17. A statewide recall election for Gov. Scott Walker could cost more than $9 million and as much as $17 million with a primary, according to numbers released by the Government Accountability Board on Jan. 6. Significant numbers, for sure, but what does that mean to local municipalities and taxpayers? In an attempt to put a price tag on a possible recall election, cities, villages and towns across the state participated in a survey from the GAB. The survey asked clerks for estimated costs of a hypothetical recall election based on real costs for local elections in November 2010 and April 2011. Those estimated costs were broken down into three categories: All municipalities would be financially impacted, but…
