A former secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources will speak at the River Bend Nature Center April 2.
On the heels of mining reforms passed earlier this month, the River Bend Nature Center will host a lecture on Wisconsin mining regulations. George Meyer, executive director of the Wisconsin Wildlife Federation and a former secretary of the state Department of Natural Resources, will speak at 7 p.m. April 2 at the Nature Center, 3600 N. Green Bay Road. Meyer will discuss the bill and "how new policies and regulations need to protect our natural resources and public health while allowing safe extraction of our mineral resources," according to a Racine County Conservation League news release. Republican governor doubles down on goal to create 250,000 jobs by 2015 in his State of the State address, but Democrats remain skeptical.
Vowing to "put more money in the hands of the hard-working taxpayers," Gov. Scott Walker Tuesday night promised to push for middle-class tax cuts and double downed on his pledge to create 250,000 jobs by 2015. Addressing the state Legislature in his annual State of the State message, Walker acknowledged that Wisconsin is still a long way off meeting the jobs goal that he campaigned on in 2010. He noted that others have pointed out "plenty of reasons" why job creation in the state has been difficult, including the slow recovery at the national level and well as ongoing concerns about the impact of the Affordable Care Act. Speaker-elect Robin Vos plans to introduce mining law reform as his first order of business when the state Legislature reconvenes later this month.
Calling it "a top priority" when the state Legislature officially returns to work later this month, Assembly Speaker-elect Robin Vos (R-Rochester) will make mining law reform the first bill introduced during the new session. Vos and Majority Leader Scott Suder (R-Abbottsford) say reform is needed to bring mining back to the state while also protecting the environment. “Mining reform is a top priority in the state Assembly,” Vos said in a press release. “I’m hopeful all the interested parties can come together to protect our environment and make mining reform happen.” Vos and Suder joined Gov.
