Voces de la Frontera to Ryan: Keep Families Together

A small group of about 25 people gathered Friday afternoon at Monument Square to urge Congressman Paul Ryan to stay the course on immigration reform. Specifically, members of Voces de la Frontera and YES (Youth Empowered in the Struggle) want Ryan to keep backing reforms that keep families together, and they delivered a petition with over 7,000 signatures to Ryan's Racine office to back their point. Kevin Seifert, a spokesperson for Ryan, responded by saying, "Congressman Ryan has spoken about the need for immigration reforms that address the approximately 11 million undocumented individuals already here and that do so in a way that respects the rule of law." They also asked Ryan to stop using terms like "anchor babies," because doing so …

Frances Martin, your argument shows your naive mentality, as history is nothing but one group of people moving, settling, and fighting for space. Take your whining somewhere else, anywhere but the real world where the rest of us need to function. What an absolute joke.   more ›

YES Members Head To Washington D.C. For Immigration Reform Rally

Valeria Ruiz, an undocumented student who attends Case High School, will be among thousands who will rally in Washington D.C. for immigration reform on Wednesday.

More than 50 Racine area students and adults are traveling Washington D.C. for tomorrow's "Time is Now" rally for immigration reform. A send-off for the group was held Tuesday at the Racine Labor Center. Thousands of undocumented workers are expected to participate in the rally, which will be held on Wednesday. Racine's Youth Empowered in the Struggle group wants to join those putting political pressure on federal legislators and President Barack Obama to pass an immigration reform bill, which is expected to be introduced this week. Valeria Ruiz, a junior at Case High School and a member of YES, was among several speakers who told their story at Tuesday's event.  "I'm undocumented and I am unafraid," she said. Ruiz talked about why it is …

I am delighted that the Whitehouse has solved the problem of job creation and has put forth a budget geared to making a significant reduction of our National debt. With the savings already pouring in from Obamacare, we can confidently and simultaneously tackle immigration and gun control. Sure glad our President came to office with so much prior experience.   more ›

Despite Controversy, YES Students Focus on Martin Luther King's Message

Local conservatives have taken issue with a local student-led group that has helped get out the vote, and advocated for student and teacher rights. Amid heavy criticism, Racine Unified and United Way backed out of supporting MLK day events.

After hours of volunteering their time at local nonprofit agencies Monday morning, hundreds of students — members of Youth Empowered in the Struggle (YES) — took to the streets to march on a frigid afternoon to honor Martin Luther King Jr. YES, a youth group overseen by Voces De La Frontera, organized the Martin Luther King Day events. The group has had its share of critics as being political, but advisors from YES say it's a nonpartisan group. Still, over the past year, a number of conservative groups have voiced criticism over YES, especially after conservative talk show host Mark Belling put pressure on the United Way to stop funding Voces De La Frontera when it worked on get-out-the-vote projects, put together a student bill of rights …

The United Way can not win in these highly political times. They piss someone off no matter what they do. I am glad not to be in charge of that organization.   more ›
