Patch readers (and fish fry connoisseurs) throughout the Milwaukee area cast thousands of votes over the past five days, helping us determine some of the best fish fry spots in the area. This is the first in a series of stories where Patch will ask readers to give their takes on favorite local businesses and places.  The winners of the best fish fry contests were determined over the course of a week, from more than 20,000 votes cast, 145 comments left, 37 restaurant reviews and 100 Facebook Likes or Recommends.  Here's a roundup of the winners:

For six weeks, it's all about the fish.

From dishwasher to coordinating the event, Bill Lichter has had his hands in all sorts of jobs for St. Rita’s Fish Fry. He’s one of about 40 to 50 volunteers involved with the dinner, which has been going on for about 24 years.  But his tenure qualifies him to be in the newcomer category. After all, he only started washing dishes nine years ago. In previous years, he used to joke with the other volunteers about wanting to cook the fish, but they said he had to work his way up the ladder first. Then five years ago, the organizer of the event stepped down from the position because he wanted to become a deacon. “Next thing you know, I’m in charge,” Lichter said.
