Rayne's World

It's Heartbreaking That it Had to Happen at All

The assassination of Osama bin Laden has stirred up conversations of morals, justice and values. Sometimes it is difficult to pick a side.

When writing an editorial, I typically feel firmly about one side of an issue. I mean, it is an opinion piece; so having an opinion is quite essential. However this week I feel full of ambiguity regarding the topic at hand. I suppose there is no moral instruction booklet on how to appropriately feel about the assassination of a mass murdering, terrorist leader. While lying in bed, we heard that President Obama would be making an unusual late Sunday night address. Instantly, I thought “Gaddafi is dead.” My husband suggested Osama Bin Laden but I thought, "no way." I kind of assumed he was already dead – somewhere, somehow. I never once thought he would be found alive. Wrong-o!! We proceeded to watch the news coverage which pummeled us for …

Nice article... very true. I definitely was glad we got him, but I was not about to spark a party out of it. It was like a business accomplishment, a finally finished task that was beyond overdue... but because of all that it related to and how long it took, it was not really celebratory as much as relieving. I will hold celebration for when we can bring the ground troops home... which I hope is …   more ›

Osama bin Laden’s Gone: Drinks on the House!

The Summit is offering free cocktails through Tues., May 3.

Dave Ellsworth, owner of The Summit Restaurant, is a bit surprised at all the attention his electronic sign has been getting Monday. It says simply: “bin Laden is Gone!  Cocktails on us!” “My IT guy – John Gillis – came up with it,” says Ellsworth. “We thought it would be a patriotic thing to do.” Osama bin Laden, the infamous terrorist leader, was killed in Pakistan by U.S. special forces over the weekend. His death was announced late Sunday evening. The Summit's message appeared about 7:30 a.m. Monday on the sign in front of the restaurant at 6825 Washington Ave., Mount Pleasant. Ellsworth says all patrons will receive their first beer, wine or cocktail on the house. Bar activity was “triple normal” during Monday’s lunch time. Ellsworth …

Military Moms React to News of Bin Laden's Death

Whether or not this news changes anything remains to be seen, they say.

Sue Gourdoux said that news of Osama Bin Laden's death is a blessing, but Americans should remain alert. Her son, Joe, served two tours in Iraq and narrowly missed being sent to Afghanistan for his third tour. Instead, he played a support role in Kuwait. "I know this is closure for some of the families," Gourdoux said. "But we shouldn't let (Bin Laden's) death decrease our fears. There's another evil guy to take his place." Gourdoux is the president of the Blue Star Mothers Southeast Wisconsin, Chapter 2, an organization that supports the moms of active and retired military. She said she thinks President Obama did a great job getting Bin Laden at just the right time, but her focus is on the men and women in uniform. "I'm so proud of our …

Osama bin Laden Is Dead, say U.S. Officials

Officials with the U.S. Military say they have Bin Laden's body.

President Barack Obama confirmed tonight that a small team of U.S. troops killed Osama Bin Laden in a firefight. No Americans were harmed and care was taken to minimize civilian casualties. The U.S. military has taken custody of Bin Laden's body. Once the news broke, jubilant crowds gathered outside the White House, waving American flags and chanting "USA!" Bin Laden was found at a mansion 60 miles from the capitol of Pakistan. The President said that Pakistani intelligence helped with the operation, which took place on Sunday. The President spoke from the White House around 10:30 p.m. Central time. Here are his complete remarks: Good evening.  Tonight, I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has …

Brian-the insults continue, I see. Concerning GWB, some are just not ready to accept the sugar-coated revisionism of his presidency (a la the media turning Nixon into an "elder statesman"). If that's "Bush bashing," fine for those who appreciate alliteration. I have made no "digs" to be found 100% false. And I prefer to believe that "birthers" are small minded people who are easily manipulated, …   more ›
