The child sex assault case against Curt Johnson can't move forward until the justices issue a decision on an appeal in the matter.
Wisconsin Supreme Court justices heard arguments this week on the ongoing question about whether the alleged victim in the Curt Johnson child sex asault case has to release her medical records and if she will testify in the case. Attorneys on both sides of the Johnson case laid out their cases before the high court on Monday. The Racine County case is on hold, pending the justices' decision on the appeal. Johnson was charged in March 2011 with repeated sexual assault of the same child after a therapist in Arizona reported that Johnson said in therapy sessions that he inappropriately touched his stepdaughter. As issue is whether the victim has to release her medical records, and if she'll be allowed to testify if she refuses to do so. …

Swag bags at the Academy Awards had a hometown connection.
Stars get a lot of swag for being part of the Academy Awards, and this year was no exception. Hollywood's A-listers took home swag bags worth almost $50,000, according to Business Insider, which is considered one of the least expensive packages in recent history. Sure there's a vacation to Australia and dessert-inspired candles, but stars also took home some very practical items as well. In addition to some pretty bracelets that double as hair ties, there's also the new Windex pump cleaner from our very own SC Johnson, because you just never know when Anne Hathaway or Ben Affleck will need to take care of a mess at an after party.

Otto and Beverly Tarnowski donated what may be the largest donation to Gateway from an individual in college history.
Caledonia residents Otto and Beverly Tarnowski are giving the largest private donation to Gateway Technical College in the school's history. A wing of the new SC Johnson integrated Manufacturing and Technology Center is named Tarnowski Hall in their honor. Beverly attended the official grand opening Tuesday of the 18,000 square foot addition to Gateway's Sturtevant facility. Fisk Johnson, CEO of SC Johnson, also delivered remarks, saying iMET will help train workers to fill the skills gap area employers are talking about. "There are good jobs that need filling but the gap between jobs and workers is troubling during this time of high unemployment," he said. "Southeast Wisconsin has a jewel in Gateway that other communities don't have."

The company has long made efforts to go green and now they have furthered that commitment to renewable energy by installing the largest onsite, company-owned wind turbines in the midwest.
RENEW Wisconsin, a nonprofit advocate for renewable energy, has lauded SC Johnson’s efforts to power up their manufacturing operations in Mount Pleasant with wind turbines. SC Johnson received the "Renewable Energy Customer-Generator of the Year” after they installed two wind turbines, which have 135-foot-long blades and produce about eight million kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity annually, enough to power 700 homes in a year. Kelly M. Semrau, senior vice president of global corporate affairs, communication and sustainability at SC Johnson, expressed her gratitude for the award. "To be recognized with other Wisconsin companies that also champion clean energy is truly an honor and speaks to the priorities of the business community in our…

SC Johnson turbines will help the facility provide 100 percent of its electrical energy onsite.
With the push of a button and after a short wait, the new wind turbines at the SC Johnson Waxdale plant began steadily turning and providing renewable energy Tuesday. The addition of wind power to the plant’s existing energy production means that the facility is now able to produce an average of 100 percent of its electrical energy onsite, reducing the plant's carbon emissions by 6,000 metric tons annually, according to the company. The wind turbines, with their 135-foot-long blades, will produce about eight million kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity annually, enough to power 700 homes in a year. Fisk Johnson, SC Johnson chairman and CEO, said the wind turbines were a personal passion of his and stand as a testament to the company’s …

After waiting it out for a few months, it appears as though the state's highest court will review a portion of the Curt Johnson child sex assault case.
The state's highest court has decided to review a portion of the child sex assault case pending against Curt Johnson. A request for review was first filed by the state Attorney General's office with the Wisconsin Supreme Court last spring. At issue is an appellate court ruling, which stated that as long as the alleged victim withholds her medical records, she does not have to testify. The AG's office filed the appeal on May 17, one day short of the deadline. The Court of Appeals Second District panel upheld part of the original ruling by Racine County Circuit Court Judge Eugene Gasiorkiewicz, agreeing that the victim has the right to keep her medical records private. But, the appellate judges disagreed with the lower court saying the …

Construction of SC Johnson's wind turbines is underway at the Waxdale plant in Mount Pleasant.
Pieces of wind turbines arrived at SC Johnson's Waxdale plant in Mount Pleasant Monday. When complete and operational, the pair of turbines will generate 15 percent of the plant's electricity needs. The company's goal is to eventually get all of Waxdale's energy from sources produced onsite, with a full 60 percent coming from renewable sources. Mount Pleasant trustees last December approved the turbines with a 6-1 vote. Residents who initially opposed the project met with company officials last fall to successfully address concerns.
