ReplyThis is the biggest ripoff I've ever seen. I have to waste my time coughing up $15 every quarter so folks in the Caledonia municipal water district can pay for their fire hydrants and pipes? And poor farmers with nothing that can burn other than their crops have to pay too? Who cooked this one up, Bradley? Or was it those other morons residents put in their positions on the village board? I hope this generates as much opposition as the Wal-Mart!!! Let's hope the PSC says NO (but, of course, they won't).

On the article What’s the Going Rate For Lawn Service in Caledonia?

ReplyWhen I moved to Caledonia over 20 years ago I decided to hire a lawn service to mow my 1 acre lot. I forget the cost but the grief and irritation wasn't worth it at any cost. They screwed everything up. My favorite was one day they came after a few days of rain and decided to mow the grass in the ditch beside the highway. They had some huge push mower that sunk in and got stuck! When they finally got it out deep ruts remained. That was the last straw. Shortly thereafter I purchased a large garden tractor and have been doing the job myself ever since.

No, there aren't any zero-interest mortgages. That's why I wrote a check for the full purchase price of my house when I bought it in 1991.

ReplyImagine all the travelers (and truck drivers) who aren't from around here and have no idea this is coming!! But I guess they have to do it if they are ever going to finish that bridge on Rawson and re-open the entrance and exit ramps.

ReplyIt's sad that this poor man decided to take his own life. What's even sadder is the method he chose which subjected many passengers and Amtrak employees to experience his demise first hand. At least he didn't choose a method that could have harmed anyone else. My only question which to date remains unanswered is just WHY he lost his job at Walgreens which seems to be what caused him to make this decision. Considering how the media loves to sensationalize (as evidenced by the wall-to-wall coverage with many pictures) these stories, I'm surprised someone didn't reveal this detail.

ReplyI retired at 55 (I'm 62 now) not by choice but fortunately I also followed the "single and no children" plan. I also followed the "save save and save" plan. As a result, long before I retired my house was paid for and I've always been debt-free. In fact, I have never paid a finance charge in my entire life. Finance charges and other temptations can bury a person in debt forever. A good credit rating today is something to be very proud of!!

On the article Storm Sewer Fees: Tax on Poor or Funding for Needed Projects?

That's not true. In the West end of the Village THERE ARE NO STORM (or other) SEWERS. There also aren't any "projects" pertaining to storm runoff unless you consider the ditches on each side of the highway. This is a clever scam to get people who have no benefit at all from Village sewer (storm or sanitary) or water facilities to help pay for it. I think you'd better quiz your resources further, Denise.

On the article How Long is the ER Wait at Caledonia-Area Hospitals?

ReplyThe problem is that people with no money or insurance have figured out that they can obtain FREE medical care by appearing at an ER. But hospitals have also figured out this trick and now demand $100 or more in advance unless the patient is just about lying on the floor dying. There aren't a lot of folks with no money or insurance trekking to Wheaton in Franklin on 27th Street so this might be why the waiting time is less.

ReplyThis whole thing reverts to my original comment-why should Caledonia residents who do NOT have municipal water or sewer have to pay for it? I see Waangard thinks it's a great idea. Too bad there weren't enough votes other than mine against him.

They can't even fix their roof but they come up with a goofy proposal to charge EVERY parcel of land a "fire protection fee"? Reminds me of the song "Ah ah oh oh my roof's got a hole in it and I might drown"....
