My first reaction was to lash out at your statement, Mike. But I have realized that it is only out of ignorance and misunderstanding of a very complex and difficult issue. For people who have never had to deal with a mental illness - be it themselves or a loved one - there truly is no way to REALLY understand. And yes, suicide does tend to get an anger reaction out of some people. That is reasonable.
But I would like you and others to understand that while many sufferers can be quite self absorbed, they are not sociopaths who do not care about others. In fact, I doubt there have been hardly any cases of sociopaths killing themselves.
Quite conversely, people in this state of sadness most often think so little of themselves that they honestly believe the world is better off without them. I am sure there are cases where people do it with an "I'll show them" mentality. But I am willing to bet that is a minuscule percentage.
When in that state of mind - especially if alcohol or drugs are involved - impulsivity mixed with despair is a powder keg. They don't think about every consequence or even realize that tomorrow they could quite possibly feel very differently. They are trapped in that moment as see no way out. This is not something in their control. He did not kill himself because he lost his job. Losing his job was probably just a symptom.
We all have faults. And I certainly won't judge a person whose fault was really not of their own doing.

I beg to differ. Many times people with a mental illness self medicate by abusing drugs. Of course not everyone with a mental illness uses drugs, however most people who do use drugs have an underlying mental illness. So, yes. They have plenty to do with one another.

ReplyIn addition - I feel the exact same way in regards to overdose deaths as well - which also usually stems from mental illness as well.

I see your point BM. This is a very uncomfortable and touchy subject. And of course, such a tragedy. But if I may offer another perspective. I think we need to start speaking out when it comes to suicide. So often it is pushed under the rug, hidden. I think many people would be shocked at suicide statistics. So I just don't think sweeping these stories under the rug is working. Yes, there is a family to think about. But there are also 100s of other families who may be able to benefit from such a story. Benefit in the way of conversation, awareness and real good look at the devastation. It may spark someone to ask for help. It may inspire a friend to reach out to someone on the edge. We NEED to start talking about mental illness just as often and as loud as we do for cancer or heart disease.
We are so desensitized as a society - as individuals. Maybe we need to see the emotional gore of it up front and personal. Maybe we need the names and the jobs and all those details to make the story REAL and not just another sensational blurb.
This is the second reported suicide in one week in Mount Pleasant. Both young men who offered much to the world but for whatever reason, couldn't see their own worth. This is illness. This is not a simple matter of choice.
We need to talk about it. We need to read about it. We need to care.

ReplyI too worry about false accusations. Anyone can be accused of anything. A lot of crappy people out there who use the system for revenge or for their own sociopathic entertainment. If this were law, it could take an inmocent parent away from a child.
I get the purpose and merit of the bill...but I worry about the unforeseen consequences. I also think there should be stricker punishment for those who make false accusations. Because of them it make it difficult to protect real victims.

ReplySince it was mentioned by someone else I feel the need to clarify about my low cut top/push up bra comment...that was COMPLETELY an "in general" comment. I have never once laid eyes on Rudychev and have no idea how she dresses. Furthermore, I couldn't care less. Believe me, sometimes the boobies are hard to hide. And really...who cares. Unless she was coming to work dressed as a Bratz Doll - I don't see how it matters. All I was saying is that IF a woman wears more revealing clothing, she shouldn't get bent out of shape if a someone glances in that direction. It is human nature. Now, if some guy is talking about her (again, in general) boobs or trying to touch them...that is a different story.
ANYWAY...I have heard that this has nothing to do with sexual harassment anyway. So, how she dresses is of no relevance.
Maybe this chic was a jerk to people and that is why people are lashing out. Or maybe they are just jealous because she is good looking. Who knows. Still, I sure wish we could know the true, whole story. There is way too much room here for people to make up their own stories in their minds.
If anyone wants to contact me - I'd be happy to write about it. I am a blogger and am not held to the same rules...info can be anonymous. I take no sides in this and have NO loyalties to anyone in MP. I just think people should know what the hell is going on.

ReplyAlright. This is honestly getting to a level where we cannot even laugh anymore.
We never hear about what this "harassment" is. I do not remember reading that it was sexual harassment. Are we to assume that? Because I didn't.
If it was, I don't care what anyone was wearing. True harassment is not justifiable based on one's outfit. HOWEVER, I am so friggin sick of this term being thrown around for every little questionable thing a person may say. Telling a woman she looks nice today is NOT harassment. And yes, if you wear a low cut top and a push up bra - guys are going to take glances. You cannot consider that harassment and it IS a result of your outfit. Let's be real. If some guy is slappin' you on the ass or asking you out repeatedly or hanging out by your car every evening...yea that would be harassment. How can we really judge or even fairly contemplate these stories if we don't know what the hell they are even talking about??
If this is some other kind of harassment...then what?? These accusations are always so vague, it is annoying. Like those obnoxious people who type things like "People suck!" as their Facebook status.
If you want people to vote differently then tell your whole story. Vague accusations come off as dramatic and attention seeking.
Until we get the full story, it would be idiotic for any of us to assume anything about any of these people. But the fact that all their time and energy is focused on sandbox bullcrap is pretty pathetic.
