troll: someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as a forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion; synonym: tansandy - commonly perceived as unintelligent and promoting antipathetic emotions of disgust and outrage, which morbidly gives “it” a sense of pleasure; often having a pathetic, empty life fulfilled solely by on-line provocation.

    Denise/Heather:

I'd like to extend a sincere thanks to you and your staff (I'm guessing you're both it) for your thorough election and candidate coverage.

    Thanks again.

    Ed:

    "WALMART: no on the location"

    1) Does this mean yes on Walmart somehwere in Caledonia?

    2) If yes, then where exactly do you propose they locate it?

    Thanks.

    Per Brian:

"I do support putting it on Hwy 31 and 4 Mile and see that as a more reasonable and appropriate site. Just because you happen to live in the area doesn't change my mind. Heck, I live 1 mile from that site."

Actually, you live about two miles from the site - more than enough buffer to not affect you in any way. However, at what point do you become a NIMBY, Brian? At what point will you disfavor the proposal of a 180,000+ square foot, 24 hour, 1100+ cars per day, delivery trucks all night, Black Friday fiasco supercenter in geographical relation to your home?

How about putting it at the NE corner of 38 and 31? It's a big enough parcel, and even better suited than 31 and 4 mi to handle the truck traffic because it is not limited by a class B rd. Walmart could easily propose to buy up residences near the corner there and to make any necessary zoning and LUP changes. Maybe the Walmart site plan could extend the parking lot north to the southern portion of Mona Park Rd?

Would you prefer the 38 and 31 location any less than 31 and 4 mile location? If so, why?

    Brian:

    1) You are an appointed official of the Village of Caledonia (appointed by Statute, as you say).

    2) As an appointed official, the Village of Caledonia compensates you/you company for your services.

    3) As an outspoken proponent of commercial development within Caledonia, your central argument in favor of Walmart is that such development is needed to pay for Village services, and that any lack of such development will result in the cutting of Village services.

So, my point is simply this: you are critical of NIMBYs and repeatedly bring up NIMBY arguments to discount any criticisms of Walmart. Yet, in view of the above-recited points, no criticism should be applied to your arguments in favor of Walmart?

You are right; I have not been here as long as you. Thus, the "save don't pave" Board members that you recite are before my time. Yet, you prefer to stereotype me and others opposing Walmart as having the same purported agenda (i.e., allow no development whatsoever) as the people you recite above when nothing is further from the truth. Is such stereotyping beneath you? Maybe I'm sick of the stereotypes you apply to me and others through your commentary.

For example, in 2011, I attended a Wild Root Market informational meeting in Racine. At the time, Wild Root Market was actively looking for a place to locate their Racine area store. I suggested somewhere in Caledonia (even along Hwy 31). It would have been a good fit for both Wild Root Market and Caledonia alike…..locally grown produce readily available for the Market; a retail establishment not imposing to Caledonia neighbors or a drain on Village services.

No one from the CDA was there pitching the Village; no board members, NO ONE.

Perhaps more ambition by the CDA would have allowed us to avoid yet another “knee-jerk” Walmart development issue that is again dividing the Village?

    One final point, Brian:

You repeatedly lay blame for any lack of any commercial development within the Village on the "save don't pave crowd." Yet, the board members of this crowd have long since been replaced.

In the mean time, the Village has the Community Development Authority (CDA, aka, Economic Development Committee) that is tasked with “attract[ing] viable businesses into the Village that will enable the community to grow and prosper."

    http://www.caledoniawi.com/document_detail.aspx?document_id=124

What exactly has this Committee done over the years to attract viable businesses into the Village? Help me out here; I’m having difficulty discerning this from the Committee’s below agenda and minutes.

    http://www.caledoniawi.com/community_development_authority.aspx

Will you not agree, after viewing the above agenda and minutes, that this Committee has been less-than-ambitious in following through with their objectives?

    @Brian:

"And I have a right, like any other citizen of the village to voice my opinions as well."

Maybe you do. However, you are not just some plain citizen. You are an appointed official of the Village Board (a municipal official under Sec 19.42 of the state ethics code), and are making very strong arguments to constituents in this Village relating to an issue that will ultimately come before your employer for a vote.

Furthermore, you accuse the very constituents that you serve of intimidation and often resort to name calling against those constituents that you disagree with. Perhaps you see no harm in this. However, others do. Does it not strike you as odd that you are the only Village official commenting (at least openly) on these blogs in relation to Walmart?
