Attention Drivers: 4-Mile Between Douglas and Charles Closing

Getting around the east side of Caledonia is going to get a little more difficult for a couple of weeks starting Monday when sewer work gets underway on 4-Mile Road.

4-Mile Road between Douglas Avenue and Charles Street will close to all but local traffic for approximately two weeks for planned sewer work that is part of the Kremer subdivision project.

"This is not new," said Bob Lui, manager of the Caledonia Utility District. "We included this work in the total cost for the sewer and water work in the Kremer subdivision."

Sewer and water lines are being replaced along most streets in the Kremer subdivision, between Douglas and Charles and between 3-Mile and 4-Mile roads. Roads will also get wider and include curb and gutter.

Lui said work being done on 4-Mile Road will include replacing and repairing sections that he classified as "in bad shape." Racine County is planning to do repairs on that stretch of road and officials with the county asked the village to get their work done sooner rather than later.

"We're closing the road with permission of the county to get in and out faster," he said.

Jeff Katz from the county Department of Public Works confirmed there is work planned for that length of 4-Mile, but it won't get underway until a little later in the year. The good news is when that work gets underway, the road will remain open to traffic.

"We plan to do some repair work and then resurface the roadway later this year, but 4-Mile will stay open," he confirmed.

Caledonia's part of the project will close 4-Mile from Monday to about June 17, give or take a few days. Manhole covers will also be replaced along the work zone.
