Small Flashlight Halts Possible Confrontation

One man says carrying a flashlight is what helped thwart a confrontation with another man upset over dog-walking without a leash.

After flipping each other the bird, one man approached another but backed off when the second man pulled out a small flashlight.

Caledonia police say they were called at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to the 4700 block of Erie Street by a man who wanted to report a confrontation with another resident.

The man told officers he had his dog off-leash near the open water retention area on Johnson Avenue when another man started yelling about putting his dog on a leash. The second man flipped off the first man, and he returned the salute before walking away to avoid further confrontation.

Police say the resident told them the second man started running toward him so he pulled a small flashlight out of his pocket and told the man to stay back.

The second man took the advice and the pair proceeded to have a discussion about leash laws. The first man admitted to police he was scared of what could have happened had he not pulled out his flashlight, police reports read.

Police were not asked to speak to the second man, but officers did let the first man know there are leash ordinances he should follow.
