2014 Budget Includes Police Officer, Part Time Parks Staff

Caledonia trustees will sort out the 2014 village budget during hearings beginning Sept. 30.

Trustees next month will sit down to hash out the proposed 2014 budget distributed Monday at the board meeting.

Amidst the various facts and figures, Village Administrator Mark Janiuk said the budget is a zero-increase but does include funds for a police officer as well as part-time staff for the parks department.

"This budget is status quo for many departments, but there are some significant changes for others," he told the board. "What's new is an additional full time police officer ... (and) an additional $8,000 in the parks budget to hire part-time employees."

Janiuk said his reasoning for the police officer stems from "communications for a number of years that the department is understaffed and ... has fairly large overtime budgets."

The parks department, he added, has long been "staffed" by volunteers and members of the parks commission. Blaine Pfeffer, highway superintendent, will oversee the new part-time staffers.

"This budget is responsible and balanced," Janiuk concluded. "Now it's up to trustees to tear into it, change it, question it."

Budget hearings have been scheduled beginning Sept. 30 and running through Oct. 3.
