DA Forwards Voter Irregularity Complaints to Investigators

Suspicious voting documents are found in a dumpster and other allegations of voter irregularities spark investigation by the Racine County Sheriff's Department.

The Racine County Sheriff’s Department is investigating allegations of voter irregularities in the recall election on June 5.

A citizen reported on Monday that he found voter registration documents in a dumpster behind the Cesar Chavez Center to Racine County District Attorney Rich Chiapete. On Wednesday several people alleged voter irregularities at the Dr. John Bryant Center in Racine.

Chiapete forwarded the case over to investigators with the Racine County Sheriff’s Department. However, the press release didn’t go into any further details.

According to a story by our media partners at Fox 6, Racine County Clerk Wendy Christiansen asked a staff member at the Cesar Chavez Center if they had received any complaints. The staff member told Christiansen he hadn’t received any complaints.

Democrat John Lehman has officially unseated Republican Sen. Van Wanggaard (R-Racine) in the 21st District recall election that will determine the makeup of Wisconsin's state Senate.

The Racine County Board of Canvassers met Tuesday morning to certify the results of the June 5 election and found that Lehman won by a margin of 834 votes.

Wanggaard has yet to concede and campaign officials say they have received allegations of voter fraud and voting irregularities. However, County Clerk Wendy Christensen told FOX 6 News that she was not aware of any problems at the polling places on election day.

Wanggaard’s campaign manager Justin Phillips said they were aware of a number of voter irregularities, but they were only allegations.

I hope that this is a thorough investigation so that we'll finally know exactly how pervasive fraud is in our electoral process and what needs to be done to rectify the problem (Voter ID). This is our best chance to put a representative situation, such as the one that occurred in SD-21 on and before June 5th, under a microscope and learn the truth. All absentee ballots and same day registrations should be scrutinized and a public hand recount of the ballots conducted.

The electoral shenanigans and voter fraud of the likes of Richard M Daley and Robert Pastrick must be stopped if we're to have a fair and just electoral process in this republic! This is not a partisan issue, it's an issue of fairness and justice!

Luckily, JB Van Hollen conducted precisely that kind of investigation into the 2008 election (see http://badgerherald.com/news/2011/02/01/doj_task_force_charg.php), where 20 cases of fraud were found, zero of which would have been prevented by photo ID. Another investigation into the 2004 election found 7 cases of fraud, zero of which would have been prevented by photo ID. That doesn't mean voter fraud by impersonation never happens, but it does mean that it happens at sufficiently low levels to not leave a trail of convictions.

I'll tell you what would make me feel enormously better about voting integrity: randomly selecting a sample of voting machines (perhaps 100) each election and doing a hand-count of the ballots put through them to verify the results. Since estimates of the cost of last year's SC race recount were circa $1m, counting about 2% of machine-passed ballots should be just a few tens of thousands statewide. More for ballots with multiple races, so somewhere in the region of $100k-200k every other year shouldn't be wildly wrong. This would make it virtually impossible to influence a statewide election through subverted voting machine code (which currently has a far higher reward/risk ratio than trying to vote multiple times yourself) without being caught, and is far cheaper to implement than photo ID (which runs over $3m each year).

Note I'm not saying here that photo ID is bad (that's a different discussion); I am saying that there are far lower-hanging fruit to pick when it comes to election integrity.

Oh Brother! Give me a break. You right wing nut jobs just can't believe that your guy would lose. Why would you think that when even the cops who know him best would not vote for him. The people in Racine don't want Van and he would have lost big time if it were not for the reflexive Republican voters west of I 94.

@Jim -

Afraid they're going to trace some fraud back to you? Why not conduct a thorough investigation. It will either expose fraud or vindicate that argument. What do we have to lose by checking things out to make sure everything was conducted on the up and up?

BTW - Van hasn't represented the City of Racine since August 23, 2011, so who cares if the City of Racine doesn't like him. The only reason they were permitted to participate in his recall is because of a faulty and inequitable drafting and passage of Act 43, and the fact that Senate Democrats and Sen Dale Schultz (R), fearing his own recall at the time, failed to back Sen Lazich's amendment that would have rectified this situation before the recalls had even been filed, instead choosing their own partisan and personal political interests above the equity of the affected people in the new districts.

Van's been representing the new SD-21 and Wirch has been representing a majority of the City of Racine (now a part of the new SD-22) since August 24, 2011. So essentially, this recall allowed the City of Racine to recall Van even though he didn't even represent it since before the recall was even initiated on November 15, 2011. Do you think that's fair?

Jim - I know a lot of law enforcement officers and they not only supported Van Wanggaard, but they also voted for him! I also know someone who signed the recall, but regretted signing it after seeing the positive things that Governor Walker and Senator Van Wanggaard were doing. That was another vote that you "Left Wing Nut Jobs" lost!

There is no doubt in my mind that Lehman stole the election with assistance from the radical left in Racine. What was needed to be done to win - was done. Now Racine will pay the price of having another Democrat who believes in levying and enforcing punitive confiscatory income and property taxation as a wealth transfer program from the productive to the non-productive.

Hey Racine - How's "No Jobs Johnny", his Cousin "Tom" and John Lehman working out for you? Where's the private sector jobs and businesses? Why all the empty store fronts, burnt out buildings, abandoned houses, and closed factories? With RRR leaving, you can add another empty property to your looooong list.

But hey, John levies a heavy tax burden so you can have North Beach #1 and a Harbor Playground for the rich SWPL's of Racine and Illinois. Tell City Haul you'll pay your property tax with some of that golden sand from North Beach!

@Richard: So: (a) you're privy to some evidence that the DA is not - I suggest you hand it over to their office since withholding it could land you in deep legal trouble; and (b) Lehman forgot to steal the votes for Barrett while he was at it too.

This smells of ACORN............ WI. Jobs Now and Voces have to have ties.

We must root out the fraud. The majority people of this state want Photo ID at the polls.

Leftist pundit, political commentator, and spokesman Ed Schultz apparently has no troubles with election fraud, that is, so long as it benefits the Democrats:
