4-Mile Opening TBD; 'Work Moving Right Along'

Work continues on the 4-Mile Road overpass, but the road will not be open by Aug. 1.

Traveling under the 4-Mile overpass will have to wait a few weeks. The Aug. 1 deadline is probably not going to happen because crews are working to compact sand that is six-feet deep.

"We knew the sand was there, but we didn't know the extent of the issue until we dug down there," said Village Engineer Mike Hayek.

Compacting the sand is necessary to keep the future road from settling too much.

There is also a pair of 60" pipes (diameter) going in that will be part of a giant sump pump system to eliminate water accumulating under the bridge when it rains.

"Work is moving right along," Hayek said. "But this is a lot like renovating an old house; you don't know exactly what you'll find until you start ... And that can mean significant delays."
