Police: 100 MPH Chase Ends in Possession Charges

A Lomira woman is facing felony drug charges after Caledonia police say she lead them on a short chase at speeds that reached 100 miles per hour.

Gina Stephens, 47, was charged Wednesday in Racine County Circuit Court with one felony count of possession of narcotic drugs and one misdemeanor count each of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. If convicted, she faces up to four years, one month in jail and/or up to $11,500 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint, Caledonia police at 4 p.m. Monday chased a car going westbound on 7-Mile Road at speeds approaching 100 miles per hour. Officers managed to stop the vehicle just east of Stanley Road and took the driver into custody for operating while intoxicated, second offense as well as various other traffic violations.

Police say Stephens gave officers permission to remove her purse from the trunk of her car and to search it. Officers quickly searched the bag for weapons but didn't find any. Still, on the way to the Caledonia Police Station, Stephens told police if they searched her purse they might find some things that didn't belong to her.

At the police station,  Stephens signed the consent form giving police permission to do a more thorough search of her purse. Officers found a silver pipe, three baggies containing marijuana and two plastic aspirin bottles with white pills inside. Officers also found a large amount of cash in Stephens purse, the complaint reads.

Police say Stephens told them one of the bottles held painkillers for her disabled boyfriend, for whom she is the primary caregiver. Using the drugs.com website as reference, the white pills were identified as acetaminophen and Oxycodone.

Stephens was assigned a $2,500 signature bond during her initial appearance Wednesday on the condition that she not possess or consume any alcohol or controlled substances. She is due in court for her preliminary hearing on July 3.
