Walmart on Planning Commission Agenda
Members of the Caledonia Planning Commission will talk land use Wednesday, which will impact a potential Walmart at 4-Mile and Green Bay Roads.
Will they Walmart or won't they?
That is the question Planning Commission members will answer Wednesday when they discuss and possibly vote to pass a recommendation to the Village Board about whether or not to amend Caledonia's land use plan for the parcels at 4-Mile and Green Bay Roads.
Walmart has submitted rezoning and land use plan amendment applications for the farm field at 4-Mile and Green Bay Roads - referred to as the VCM (Village Center Metra) - so the company can build a 182,000 square foot supercenter. Resident opposition has been fierce with most people pointing out that the site is not appropriate.
To help reconcile inconsistencies in the zoning and the land use plans, Village Administrator Mark Janiuk and Attorney Elaine Ekes suggested the original neighborhood planning group be brought back together - with Plan Commission members - to plan for the future of that site.

Now, the matter heads to the Planning Commission for review and the possible adoption of a recommendation they'll send to the Village Board. Once that happens, trustees will schedule a public hearing as required by state statute with the necessary 30-day notice.
At that public hearing, comments will officially become part of the record. At the next Village Board meeting, trustees will make a final decision on what to do with the parcels in question.
The Planning Commission meeting begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Eastside Community Center, 6156 Douglas Avenue.
