UPDATE: A Fourth Of July Not To Remember

Caledonia, South Shore, Racine, Oak Creek and Raymond firefighters battle blaze.

UPDATE: Battalion Chief Jeffrey Buenger, of the Caledonia Fire Department, said the cause of the fire was classified as careless use of smoking materials. Initial damage estimates will likely come in at $150,000 for the structure and could be higher adding in the contents. Adjacent residents may also add to that total if they request new paint and carpeting.

Four families were displaced from their homes after a fire ripped through the back of an eight-unit apartment building at 3540 Highway H in Franksville.

Fire personnel from Raymond, South Shore, Caledonia, and the Racine Fire Bells along with the Red Cross responded to the fire at about 3:30 a.m. Monday, July 4.

The whole back end of one of the second story apartments was charred and a back deck hung from the side of the building.

No one was injured. The cause of the fire is unknown. Red Cross personnel are assisting the families.

Fire officials left the scene at about 8:30 a.m.

The owner of the apartment building, Mark Butkus, said the damage was at least $350,000.
