Man Arrested In Kmart Theft In Caledonia, But He's Also A Suspect In Greenfield And Racine Thefts

The following information was supplied by the Caledonia Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

UPDATE: A Racine man is in police custody for taking jewelry at Kmart, 6141 Douglas Ave. in Caledonia on Oct. 1.

Steven Mack, 45, of Racine, is also suspected of taking jewelry from J.C. Penny and Boston Store at the Regency Mall in Racine. At Boston Store, Mack is suspected of taking $28,000 in jewelry on Oct. 7 and taking $23,000 in jewelry from a Kmart store in Greenfield Oct. 1.

Captain Paul Schlecht, of the Greenfield Police Department, said in his jurisdiction, Mack is suspected of grabbing a tray of rings, hiding them under his coat and leaving the store.

“We’re still trying to put together a case,” Schlecht said. “Mr. Mack has invoked his right not to speak and we’re going to have to prove our case through other means. But we’re still working with Racine and Caledonia on this though.”

In Caledonia, Mack has already been charged with one count of misdemeanor retail theft.

According to investigators with the Caledonia Police, Mack is a habitual offender and has previously been convicted of numerous thefts and spent time in prison.

An investigator with the Caledonia Police Department said Mack used multiple accomplices, including pregnant women. In all of the cases, the accomplice distracted the sales clerk while Mack allegedly took the rings.

None of the law enforcement agencies have been able to identify the accomplices. For the Greenfield and Racine police departments, the case is still under investigation. Meanwhile, Mack is being held on a probation hold.

OLDER STORY: Police are looking for two males suspects who allegedly took a pair of earrings in , 5141 Douglas Ave., at 2:09 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1.

According to a report by the , the two men were talking to a clerk when one of the men set his coat on the counter. Then, while the display case was open, the man took the earrings and put it in his pocket. He reached over a second time and the clerk saw him. When the store manager searched his coat, they didn’t find anything and had to let the two go.

The men are also suspected of taking $9,000 in merchandise from the Kmart in Greenfield.
